Uncontrollable Laughter

Recently our son has been laughing. He’s been laughing and laughing and laughing. I don’t know if he just saw a different side of his parents (and himself) when everyone dressed up for halloween, but he’s been giggling his way through life these past few weeks. It’s not as if he didn’t laugh before. He has always laughed. He’s a happy child. But something about the past couple of weeks has made him just giggle uncontrollably for extended periods of time. While I can’t be completely certain as to the reason I have noticed a common link during these moments … Continue reading

Laughter is the Best Medicine,

Laughter is the best medicine, we’ve heard it said often and it is true. Laughter can help solve or ease many problems. One of the greatest things about marriage is being able to share together. Often that means sharing private little jokes. One of the things I love about my husband is the way he laughs ant my jokes. I also love the way he makes me laugh. Even sometimes in the middle of an argument, we’ve been known to break into laughter. Laughter is positive medicine and can be helpful in a marriage. As long as you are laughing … Continue reading

The Power of Laughter

They say that laughter is the best medicine and they’re not wrong. Not only is laughing fun to do but it has long-term health benefits, especially for mental health. And it also contributes to you leading a longer (and happier!) life. Dr. Tim Sharp, a psychologist from the Happiness Institute in Sydney, Australia maintains that laughter has positive benefits, both physiologically and psychologically. Sharp claims that: “People who see the funnier side of things tend to be more resilient. These people are also able to see things from a different perspective.” Laughing clubs have sprung up around the world as … Continue reading

Daily Dose of Laughter

Maybe I’m just old but I really don’t get half the programs on Cartoon Network. But apparently kids do. As I sit listening to the rain pound against my hotel window (we’re under a tornado watch!) Tyler is absorbed in that silly program about the Grim Reaper. Bill and Mandy or something like that. Anyway, he’s been watching TV all day since the weather is too bad to leave the hotel and he’s totally enjoying the silly jokes and shenanigans being displayed. Periodically I have glanced at the screen to see if I can get a handle on what’s going … Continue reading

Laughter Really Is The Best Medicine

With all the living and learning that occurs within an ordinary family—it can sometimes seem like family life is all about a lot of hard work and not very much play. Play and laughter especially seem to become increasingly scarce as children get older—silliness disappears, or at least is reserved for time with friends and peers, and acting goofy with mom or dad just doesn’t hold the same appeal it did when everyone was younger. I don’t think we parents should give up, however. I really do think that laughter can be the glue that holds a family together during … Continue reading

Laughter: The Best Medicine

Remember the old adage that laughter is the best medicine? Well, it seems that it’s true, laughter really is good for us. According to a recent poll by Harris Interactive of nearly 3,000 adults in the U.S., 98% of parents said that having a sense of humor in life is a key ingredient in raising happy, well-rounded children. The parents also ranked humor as being almost as important as reading and writing in terms of life skills. Laughter not only improves your child’s cognitive skills but aids in the development of social and emotional development as well. It helps kids … Continue reading

All About Me: Live, Love, Laughter

What is it that makes you smile? And what gets you into a fit of giggles? And still, what makes you just break into a fit of laughter? Everyone needs to laugh, and as the old saying goes “Laughter is the best medicine”. I can attest to that. On my gloomiest, most depressing days, all it takes is something funny to happen, and I’m laughing until I cry! So what is it that makes you laugh? Think about the funny things your children do. Think about your boyfriend, husband or significant other. Do they do things that make you laugh? … Continue reading

Increase the Laughter in Your Lives

Laughter is a fabulous thing. It makes us feel great. In fact, one of the greatest joys of my marriage is the laughter I have shared with my husband. He is one of the funniest people I have ever known. Laughter is great gift for any relationship or person because it releases chemicals in the brain that not only reduce your stress, but also enhance your mood. It’s this reason that we are often attracted to the people that make us laugh from the actors to the comedians to the individuals in our daily lives. Laughter is a vital part … Continue reading

Hi and welcome to the Mental Health Blog site!

My name is Beth and I am a practicing Psychologist with almost ten years experience in personal, group, adolescent, and community counseling. Before I became a Psychologist, I graduated and worked briefly as a Geologist, mainly in research. But, as fascinating as geology is, it’s been a much more rewarding experience to help people come to grips with their problems and work with them to find a solution. It’s always given me a great sense of achievement to begin a session with an extremely distraught person, and by the end of that session, to see a smile and a glimmer … Continue reading
