The Arts and Marriage- Part 2

Sometimes with the arts, it’s a matter of not making assumptions. Recently a friend made an assumption because her husband wouldn’t go to an arts event, no-one else’s husband would either. There’s always a danger and a problem with making blanket assumptions about people. Opportunity and trying new things can make the change. Mick found when he was willing to try live theatre, he liked it. He liked how it’s a different medium to movies and how actors, directors and stage technicians get around the scenery changes required. He also liked the immediacy of live theatre. But he wouldn’t have … Continue reading

Celebrating New Year’s With Your Kids

New Year’s with your kids is a fun way to celebrate the holiday. They get a kick out of it because they hear so much talk about it. To celebrate makes them feel very grown up. It also gives them a good excuse to stay up late. Here are some neat things to do with your kids on New Year’s Eve: Order take out food that they like for the “big night”. Most kids like pizza, but this list could also include chicken wings, Chinese, fast food or any other kind of food that is reserved only for special times. … Continue reading

The Soap Opera Marriage

Even if you don’t watch them you can’t help but see ads for them. I’m not a fan of most of these types of shows. Even if I don’t watch them, it doesn’t stop me seeing the ads and promos for them as I’m changing channels, and from there it’s possible to get a pretty good idea of what is going on and what the show is about. I’m talking about soap operas. Or soapies as they are affectionately known. My question today is this: Is your marriage a soap opera marriage? I have Mick to thank for this description … Continue reading

Ks to Give Your Marriage a Kick

Okay I’m back on my alphabetical marriage hints. This time K is the main star. So here are some Ks to give your marriage a kick. Kindness One of the basic tools in any relationship needs to be kindness. So this week try and incorporate little acts of kindness , doing jobs for your spouse, maybe fixing that leaking tap or sowing that button on or picking up some shopping on your way home or sorting out the finances if your spouse finds it stressful or helping with the dishes or cooking a special meal or whatever it might be. … Continue reading

The Family That Plays, Potties, Drinks, Sleeps, and Heals Together Stays Together

Something life with Murphy has made me realize lately is that Wayne, me, and our fur kids are one tight knit clan. Which is sort of a remarkable thing in one respect. On the one hand, we’re a family made up of humans and animals. We’re not related by blood, but our bond is as strong as any blood bond could be. On the other hand, it’s hard to believe that just a little over a year ago we were a house divided. (Literally. Wayne was in Florida working a new job while I stayed behind trying to sell the … Continue reading

When You or Your Spouse Needs Surgery

Have you or your spouse ever needed to undergo surgery? As my regular readers may know, both my husband and I have both needed surgery in the last three months. Three months, it’s kind of scary when you think that’s all it’s been since I took Scott to the hospital for an emergency appendectomy. It was the first weekend of December and the following day was Cassidy’s birthday party. It was a scary night, all told, while the doctors worked diligently to diagnose why he was in so much pain and running such a high fever. It happened so quickly, … Continue reading

Ask Yourself…Are You Really Ready To Get Married?

Getting married is one of the most important decisions you will ever make. You are choosing your life partner. Your spouse will be your confidant, your best friend, your playmate, your business partner, the one you turn to in times of worry and stress and someone you will need to rely on for the years to come. Oprah did a show recently where she referred to the issue of women in the United States getting married when they really did not want to or were pressured to do so an epidemic. The engagement ring. WOW! What a wonderful piece of … Continue reading

A Note of Thanks: To My Husband

I’ve spent the last few days preparing for Thanksgiving and working with my daughter so that she understands how to say thank you and be thankful in all aspects of her life and not just at the big spread tomorrow. In that light, I want to say thank you for my husband. Let me tell you a little story of a little girl that didn’t dream about white picket fences and the house in suburbia. When I was growing up, through my pre-teen and teenage years, I remember wishing on eyelashes, on birthday candles and even on falling stars that … Continue reading

The Marriage Week in Review October 21-27

This was a great week here in the Marriage blog and as always; it’s a pleasure to share the challenge of bringing you marriage news and information with Sherry. Our guest blogger this week was Catherine Ipizcade and I suggest you check out her blogs on celebrating her marriage as well as bridal shower tips. For Sherry and I, the biggest challenge came at the end of the week as the New Jersey Supreme Court handed down their decision on Same-Sex unions. While Sherry and I often come down on opposite sides of this issue, we believe in healthy and … Continue reading
