Frugal Living Week in Review: November 26th Through December 2nd

It is finally December. I can’t believe how quickly the time has gone by. It has been a year now, since I first started blogging here at Families.com in the Frugal Living Blog. A lot has happened in the world and in my own life. I continue to be in awe of anyone who practices a frugal lifestyle, and I have learned many different ways to save money. I can’t wait to learn even more. I hope that we can help each other in our efforts to save money and provide for our family. And now, here is the Frugal … Continue reading

Keeping it Simple: What A Week It’s Been

Has it really only been five days since last Sunday – it feels like an eternity. I shared with you all some of the trials we’ve been coping with here and my husband’s emergency appendectomy. He came home late on Monday and he’s spent the last few days sleeping a great deal. It’s amazing how much energy a recovering body needs to repair itself. Taking it Slow We’re taking this health scare as a bit of a cautionary tale to take things slower and easier this holiday season. We’re big on the deck the halls here and we usually go … Continue reading

Talking To Toddlers About Major Storms

It seems as though it has been weeks since reports about Hurricane Sandy first started to appear all over the news and all other forms of media. In reality, it has only been about a week since coverage of the storm and its anticipated path started. If you are a parent of young children, you may certainly be concerned about keeping your family safe. However, you are probably equally concerned with keeping the kids calm. When everybody is preparing for a storm like Sandy, things look and feel different wherever you go. Little ones can see and feel the differences … Continue reading

Have Fun with Old Man Winter

Old Man Winter is alive and well in Wisconsin. After sleeping in for a few weeks, the season has reared its bitterly cold head and dumped nearly a half–foot of snow in less than 24 hours. Fortunately, there are ways to heat things up while keeping the kids entertained. While you may be tempted to let your little ones warm up by the glow of the TV, you’ll find that you can a lot more fun if you get out of the house and experience the following winter boredom busters: Park It: Head out to a local park to take … Continue reading

Can You Afford to Go Digital?

For some, embracing digital scrapbooking has led to an economic windfall. Several women from my scrapbook club are masters at finding free downloads for their projects. As a result, they have been able to save hundreds of dollars on scrapbooking supplies. In that regard, digital scrapbooking can yield huge savings. However, when trying to figure out if you can afford to switch from traditional scrapbooking to an online version, you also have to consider time and computer knowledge. For example, my mom willingly admits that she is about as tech-challenged as they come. It would take her weeks to fully … Continue reading

Family Time Strengthens Family Bonds

This weekend, I am making some family memories with my husband, my son, and my in-laws. A few years ago, my husband and I started joining my in-laws on their annual trip to the Common Ground Fair up in Maine. This will be our second time going with our son, and we are excited to take many pictures and record videos and notes of our experiences. Family vacations are one of my favorite ways to connect with both my parents and my in-laws and I am very lucky that we have been able to make a couple of trips pretty … Continue reading

Homemade Happy Meals

“Mommy, I wish I could have a Happy Meal for lunch EVERY DAY!” exclaimed my 6-year-old while frantically waving around the new “Rio” toy she plucked from her McDonald’s bag. “Wouldn’t that be nice?” “It would be nice,” I replied thinking about how it would spare me from getting up even earlier than I already do each day to pack a school lunch that barely gets looked at, let alone consumed. “You told me that you aren’t hungry in school,” I pressed. “Well, I would eat all of my lunch if it had a toy in it,” she countered. Well, … Continue reading

Books for Kids Who Love to Take Care of Animals

Right now, the room behind me is full of the sounds of chirping. There are the chicks, the little ones whom we’ve been incubating for three weeks. Over the last couple of days they have been hatching, and it’s been wonderful. My daughter loves to take care of animals, although I do need to manage the overall care of all of our pets. We also enjoy books about kids who love animals. If your child also wants to be a vet or a wildlife rescue person, here are a few books that you might like to read. The Salamander Room … Continue reading
