Medicaid in Vermont is Called Green Mountain Care

Every state has a Medicaid program. Some states simply call it Medicaid, while others give it a friendlier name. In Vermont, the Medicaid program is called Green Mountain Care. Clearly, the name of the Medicaid program came from the state of Vermont’s nickname. Medicaid is a public, or government run, form of health insurance. It is designed to provide health insurance for individuals and families who are low income and who cannot afford to purchase a health plan from a private insurance company. Medicaid is funded, in part, by the federal government. It is also funded by the government of … Continue reading

Ancestry.com has Updated its Yearbook Collection

It is always great when genealogy websites update their collections. What once was a “dead end” might now contain the information you are seeking. Ancestry.com has updated its Yearbook Collection. Your relatives could be in them. You can also find yearbook photos of celebrities. School yearbooks hold a lot of interesting information about what your relatives or ancestors were like when they were young. You are very likely to find a “school portrait” image within a yearbook. If your relative, or ancestor, was popular, or very active in school activities, there may be more photos of them in their yearbook. … Continue reading

The State of Texas Didn’t Expand its Medicaid Program

The state of Texas was in the news when Governor Rick Perry announced that he will not expand the state’s Medicaid program. It isn’t easy to find eligibility requirements for Medicaid in Texas from the state’s websites. I’ve been writing a series of blogs that give details about the eligibility requirements for Medicaid in individual states. Several states make it really easy to find out this vital information. Texas, however, is among the states that make it extremely difficult for a person to find out if he or she is eligible for Medicaid. You pretty much have to apply online, … Continue reading

Visits With Relatives Are The Start Of A Child’s Genealogy Journey

As parents, we want our children to grow up with a strong sense of family. We want them to know where they came from just as much as we want them to discover who they are. There are many things that we do as parents that develop that sense of family, and many times we do them without even thinking about it. Each time you arrange for your children to spend time with their grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins, and other relatives you are creating opportunities for them to build relationships with those relatives as well as opportunities for learning more … Continue reading

California Really Does Cover ABA Therapy!

Recently, I was sent a booklet of information that included several changes that had been made to my new health insurance policy. One of those changes is excellent news for parents of kids who have autism, and who live in California. Soon, insurers are going to be required to cover ABA! As of July 1, 2012, California law requires all individual health insurance plans to provide coverage for certain behavioral health treatments for pervasive developmental disorder or autism. My insurance company recently sent me a booklet that included information about this change to my health insurance coverage, (as well as … Continue reading

Wall to Wall: Growing Food Indoors

I recently started following someone on Twitter who gardens in her bathroom. Vertically. All jokes about the availability of fertilizer aside, this is a good place to garden. After all, it’s warm and it’s damp, probably once a day at least. If you replace some of your bathroom lighting with a grow light, you’d have the perfect tropical conditions – that is, until you open your window! Now, I don’t garden in my bathroom, although I’m now feeling somewhat inspired to do so. Between the towel racks and the toothbrushes, there just doesn’t seem to be that much space. However, … Continue reading

Lighting from All Angles

Ideally, all photos would be snapped using natural lighting. While it’s true that you cannot control the sun, there are many ways you can capture stunning shots when you are taking photos in the great outdoors. One of the most popular techniques for snapping frame worthy shots when you are at the mercy of Mother Nature is backlighting. Not only is the technique popular, it’s also extremely effective and relatively simple to master. Start by making sure the sun is in front of you. Light should be aimed directly at the camera, and your subject should be lit from the … Continue reading

Here are a few tips for handling holiday scheduling headaches if they do arise. Many holiday conflicts occur before the date of the actual family gathering, as family units have to make scheduling decisions about which relatives … Continue reading

Magnifying Fall

At the nature center where I work, we have an Elmo. Unlike his Sesame Street namesake, Elmo is not an assuming presence. He’s a small machine, and rather gray. However, when you turn on the switch, Elmo turns kids on to nature. He’s a macroscope. What is a macroscope? Like a hand lens, it magnifies objects that are hard to see with the naked eye. Like a microscope, it’s a machine to assist your eyes in seeing things that are not necessarily noticeable with your eyes. Our Elmo also projects items onto a screen, so worms look as large as … Continue reading
