What did you miss this week? The Insurance Blog Week in Review is an excellent way to “ketchup” on everything that hit the blog in the past seven days. There can be anywhere between twelve and fourteen different blogs that appear, and it is easy to accidentally miss something that you wanted to read. Green Tree Offer Homeowners and Flood Insurance All in One Most homeowners insurance policies do not cover flooding. For that, you need to purchase a separate flood insurance policy. Green Tree Insurance offers a combined homeowners and flood insurance policy. The Insurance Podcast Roundup went up … Continue reading

Intentional about Your Schedule

One of my biggest struggles in working from home is coming up with a workable schedule. I try one thing to see if it works and when it doesn’t, I try something else. Or I tweak my schedule one week and then implement major changes the next. Of all my “intentionals” for the year 2012, this is probably the biggest one. I don’t know why I can’t stick to a schedule. I guess I’m just one of those people that prefer something different everyday. Yet I know that I would be much more productive if I stuck to one. After … Continue reading

Intentional about Learning More

The year 2012 I plan on being intentional about learning more. I always admire adults who go back to school or otherwise continue their learning. I was in my late 30’s when I took some online courses, some related to childcare and others were general (such as economics). It felt so good to be learning even later in life. This past summer I had an opportunity to learn more about my field of writing by attending a writing conference in another state. It served as a way to sharpen my skills. Learning more about your field will help grow both … Continue reading

Being Intentional about My Home-Based Business

Many of us are looking for new changes as the year 2012 draws near. I was given a word for this upcoming year and it is “intentional.” This word can be applied to a variety of areas in my life, with one of them being my home-based business. I want to be intentional about my organization. My desk could use some of that. It is time to get rid of those things that are just taking up space. It is time to make my work space more functional. I want to be intentional about my priorities. I need to make … Continue reading

Intentional Changes for 2012

A couple of years ago I heard about going into the New Year with a “word.” It’s not like the American Dialect Society, who every year chooses a new “word of the year.” This is a word that inspires you to make changes or brings a particular meaning to your life. For instance, some people have chosen the word “hope” or “peace.” If the previous year was filled with difficulties and challenges, you might look to the New Year as having hope. Or if the previous year had been filled with relational difficulties, you might be looking at the New … Continue reading

Clarification on Asperger’s Syndrome and Violence

By now, we have all heard the tragic news about the shooting that took place in an elementary school in Connecticut. Some say the shooter had Asperger’s Syndrome. Experts point out that there is no evidence of a link between violence like what happened and the existence of Asperger’s syndrome. A tragedy has occurred in Newtown, Connecticut. I do not have the words to express the grief and pain that the parents of the children who were killed at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut must be feeling. Lacking that, I will instead quote part of what President Obama … Continue reading

California Law Officially Bans “Predatory” ADA Lawsuits

It is now official. There is a law in California that protects businesses from so called “predatory” lawsuits filed under the Americans With Disabilities Act. The purpose of this law is to protect the finances of business owners. It is not designed to protect the rights of people who have disabilities. This week, California Governor Jerry Brown has signed SB1186, the bill that was made by Senate leader Darrell Steinberg, (who is a Democrat), and Senator Bob Dutton, (who is a Republican). The law is going to protect businesses in California from what has been referred to as “frivolous” or … Continue reading

The Ups and Downs of Marriage

If you have been married for any length of time, you quickly come to realize that marriage has ups and downs. Sometimes the ups are more than the downs, but it can also be the other way. Or it may be that the downs seem to last longer. The important thing is that you accept the fact that it won’t always be sunshine and roses. Sometimes people go into marriage with a certain expectation and as soon as things get difficult, they start to question if they should stay. Sometimes they don’t even take the time to question it, they … Continue reading

Do You Have the Makings of a Good Wife?

I ran across a copy of an old article from “Housekeeping Monthly,” the May, 13, 1955 edition. The title of the article was, “The Good Wife’s Guide.” After reading through it, all I could think was, “Boy, times have changed!” The expectations of a wife from 1955 are very different than now. Here is a summary of what made a good wife in the year 1955: A meal that was ready and waiting for her husband Taking 15 minutes to refresh and touch yourself up (for added measure, put a ribbon in your hair) Clear away any clutter in the … Continue reading
