Couples and Christmastime Traditions

I’ve been so busy this month “doing” Christmas that whatever spirit I’ve had has been forced so far. But tonight during dinner Elf was on. As Wayne and I sat merrily cracking away on our crab legs (Publix had them on sale…Yum!), one of our little trees winked back at me, and I laughed at Will Ferrell’s antics as Buddy the Elf, I felt the real Christmas spirit finally taking hold. My stress started melting away and I realized I could suddenly breathe a little easier. There’s not much left to do except enjoy the holiday. The last big Christmas … Continue reading

The Marriage Blog Week in Review for December 3-9

It’s that time of year…the busy time. (Busier than usual anyway.) Find you have limited time to keep up on all the blogs you want to read? That’s what makes Week in Reviews invaluable. They’re your key to staying in tune with what Karri, Heather, and I wrote about last week in the Marriage blog. Monday, December 3 All I Want for Christmas… Since Heather and her family were assaulted with health problems throughout the year, all she wants is to enjoy her work at Families.com without anymore trips to the doctor interrupting it! For Men Who Do Not Wear … Continue reading

I’m Married to a Scrooge!

Christmas isn’t my favorite holiday, but it ranks up there near the top of the list. Some years I catch the spirit months in advance. Other years, like this one, I’m late getting into the swing of things. (Late by my standards. Normally I catch it by Thanksgiving if not beforehand.) But this year we were on the road and then I’ve been battling some cold/flu bug for the last several weeks. Haven’t had much time or energy to get decorations up, cookie platters planned (I give them to neighbors and friends), or our family Christmas letter written. (Yikes! Cards … Continue reading

How to Give a Special Gift to Your Spouse

One of the things that occupies most of my mind during the Christmas season is what on earth to get my wonderful husband. He deserves so much, and yet he claims that he needs nothing. This year, I think I finally found the right special gift, so honey, if you are reading this, please stop. If you need something to distract you, the handle on the upstairs toilet is still not working correctly. Okay, is he gone? Good. As I was saying, I want to get him a special gift, one that he could cherish through the years. He offered … Continue reading

Who Needs a Husband’s Help Christmas Shopping When There’s the Internet?

Last week I griped about how I’m married to a Scrooge and lamented how I’m responsible for making Christmas happen at our house every year by myself. I guess I was feeling sorry for myself when I wrote those because I was stressed. Most of the time everything’s done by now. Decorations have been hung, gifts have been ordered, and this week cards would have been mailed. But I got sick at Thanksgiving, right when Wayne started his three week sabbatical between jobs so we could travel and spend some time together. So instead of doing Christmas I’ve been either … Continue reading

Christmas Cards, Letters, or Pictures: Which Represents You as a Couple?

Our first Christmas as a married couple, which would have been December 1995, I started the tradition of sending out Christmas cards for both Wayne and I. Back then I picked cards with funny or clever pictures, wrote a short, quick note to the recipients, and mailed them. Christmas 1999 marked the first time I attempted a Christmas letter, which I’d previously never had much respect for. Most of the ones we received painted an entirely too rosy picture of friends and family living entirely too perfect lives. We knew the letters meant well but were stretching things a bit. … Continue reading

Who Does Christmas at Your House?

Yesterday I wrote about how I’m married to a Scrooge and that for any Christmas cheer to be spread in our house it’s up to me to spread it. Wayne doesn’t string lights, wrap garland (or presents), or mess with picking trees. His one and only contribution is getting our fiber optic tree out of the attic. After that I don’t bother asking for any more Christmas assistance because I know all I’ll get is a big bah humbug. I sort of envy those women whose husbands get into the spirit without too much griping. The ones who take the … Continue reading

The Marriage Week in Review for December 9-15

Here we are, just over 2 weeks into December and closing in on Christmas. December started off hectic for me and doesn’t show any signs of slowing down – though my vow to keep things simple has actually paid off a great deal. Yesterday was the capper to the week as we celebrated the holidays at my daughter’s school, gave out gifts and delivered gently used items to charity and more. My husband is back to work and while he is still not 100% recovered, he is doing great and enjoying getting around more. We’ve got a lot to do … Continue reading

Christmas Movies for Couples

As promised in my previous article, Christmas Eve Traditions for Couples, here are some Christmas movies that you might enjoy. Heather shared her favorites in Holiday Date Night – Celebrate with Christmas Movies. Do You Like Chevy Chase? ““National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation” isn’t exactly a romantic holiday movie, although there are some sweet parts. If you like crazy slapstick adventure combined with some tender moments, you may enjoy this movie. Chevy Chase is married to Beverly D’Angelo and the two are very cute together, even as all their plans for a perfect Christmas turn to chaos. Is this a Couple’s … Continue reading

ABC Family Network Redeems Itself

Since my Halloween rant was thrust upon ABC Family, I felt that I owed it to them to write about the specials that they are showing in light of the holiday season. This time of year brings on ABC Family’s “25 Days of Christmas.” Beginning December 1, ABC Family will run Christmas classics, original holiday movies, and movie favorites through Christmas Day. “25 Days of Christmas” kicks off Friday, December 1 at 7:00p.m. with “Frosty’s Winter Wonderland.” In this holiday animated classic, Frosty is supposed to get married, but Jack Frost has other plans. December 2 starts a Harry Potter … Continue reading
