Is There a Right Way to Load the Dishwasher?

It seems it’s been eons ago now that Jade sent me a link to an article with the subject line “housework issues.” It directed me to an article entitled “Don’t let the dishwasher ruin your marriage.” It was about a woman who’s given up loading the dishwasher because, as she put it, “No matter how I load it, my husband comes after me and reloads it.” I didn’t have a chance to write about it then. (It was around the time my mom moved in with us.) Also, housework is one of those subjects that seemed to be covered pretty … Continue reading

Home Blog Month in Review: August

Did you have a good month? We seem to have packed an entire summer’s worth of activities in this past month. Now, it seems, it is back to school and time to get ready for autumn. Still, it is nice to look back toward warm sands and wearing shorts even as we will soon be crunching leaves and taking out the sweaters. August 1st Getting Out Grass Stains With summer in full swing, chances are that your family has been playing outdoors quite a bit. And with all of that outdoor play comes the grass stains, especially if you are … Continue reading

More Advice Regarding Household Chores

We’ve been looking at the importance of communication and appreciation in allocating and doing household chores. Two other points worth mentioning are the need to prioritize tasks. When writing out a list of jobs that need doing also jot down which ones are most important. Some jobs that need to be done every day, others maybe only once or twice a week. Decide which jobs are essential and which can be let slide a little. I had a friend years ago who vacuumed her floors every day. Do floors need vacuuming every day? I don’t think so. Of course she … Continue reading

The Things We Do for Love: What I Do for My Husband

Last week I wrote The Things He Does for Love: Ghost Hunting Classes and told how I was surprised Wayne agreed to take the class, until he asked, “Don’t I always do things for you?” That reminded me of all the nice things he’s done just for me, which I listed. One reader commented that it did sound like Wayne loved me greatly, but she also wanted to know what I do for him. What a great question! And sort of a timely one, because Wayne and I were just discussing that very thing this past weekend. Ever since he’s … Continue reading

Psst, Husbands…Saturday’s Wife Appreciation Day

I swear I’m not making days up just so you have to buy your wife yet another gift. There really is such a thing as Wife Appreciation Day and it’s celebrated on September 15. Which, if you consult a calendar, you’ll see is Saturday. “That’s only two days away! How am I going to find time to get a gift for my wife by then?” Simmer down now. No need to panic. You’re missing the key word, and thus the point, of the day: appreciation. It’s not about extravagant gifts. It’s about showing her how much you value all those … Continue reading

Household Chores and a Simple Thank You

Sometimes it seems that the number one cause of rancor in a marriage is the division of household labor. The popular image of the husband going off to work every morning while the wife takes care of the house is pervasive, even in the 21st century when men are just as likely to prepare the evening meal as their wives are whether they have gone to work all day or not. When you cope with both spouses working, the division of household labor can become even more intensive. 9 times out of 10, if an overfull trash can gets on … Continue reading
