Take Time for Yourself This Holiday Season

Parents of children with special needs are notorious for not setting aside any time to themselves. They work day and night to care for their children and rarely take even fifteen minutes to relax. During the holidays, it only gets worse. There is so much more to do and so many projects to take care of this time of year that by the time the holidays are over, parents haven’t gotten to really enjoy any of the festivities. Make this year different. Give yourself the gift of day off. Get a friend, relative or respite care provider to watch your … Continue reading

Do Holidays Always Include Extended Family?

My husband and I chose to spend Mother’s Day with his parents this year. They were willing to come to our house, which worked great for me, because our baby is always happier in the comfort of our home. While my daughter napped, my mother-in-law and I relaxed in front of the TV (finally, I was able to watch TLC instead of ESPN). Our husbands slaved away in the kitchen, working to prepare a delicious Mother’s Day meal. We admired the flowers we’d been given and enjoyed the feeling of putting our feet up. After lunch, the whole gang headed … Continue reading

Thanksgiving Love Stories: Home for the Holidays

Last year at this time Wayne and I were in Denver to celebrate Thanksgiving with our family. I remember being so excited about getting to spend a whole week with Wayne. Thanksgiving, Then and Now It was a big deal because we’d spent months apart enduring a commuter marriage. But then Wayne decided not to stay with the job in Jacksonville and to get his old job back here in Nashville. I was over the moon! (Mostly because I was tired of trying to keep the house show-ready and over only seeing him on weekends.) Last year, Thanksgiving week marked … Continue reading

Being Military Around the Holidays

Being in the military can mean being away from family, not just your immediate family but you your parents, sister, brother, etc. How do you handle this? I’ve grown up military so for me this isn’t too big a deal but there are times that I become really homesick for mom and dad, especially around the holidays. I don’t remember many holidays but I do know that my family had HUGE family get-togethers, which means during the holidays I can grow very lonely when I’m hearing about all the family excitement. Yes, I do have my own but it is … Continue reading

Weekend Getaways

When it comes to couple time between you and your spouse, sometimes a weekend is all the time the two of you can afford to take – but whether it’s all you can afford or not, you can’t not afford to take that time to yourselves. Yes, I know that was one of the worst sentences – but the sentiment is genuine. Life can be hard and we’re all pretty busy with our careers, our families, our homes, our community responsibilities and much, much more. For some of us, pets are even a consideration before we can make plans to … Continue reading

Like vs. Love

“You don’t love me anymore!” The words launched out of my daughter’s mouth like a heat-seeking missile aimed directly at my heart. She was three. I was stunned. Her verbal attack was a retort to my unwavering demand that she put away her wooden puzzles and get into bed RIGHT.NOW.MISSY. Her first reaction was to kick and whine, like an overtired three-year-old. My first reaction was to ignore the flailing arms and tears, and redirect her attention to the hallway which leads to her bedroom. When the tantrum elevated to include ear-piercing screams and flying puzzle pieces I bent down, … Continue reading

Differences in Traditions

My husband grew up in a home where Christmas was celebrated to the max. There were piles of presents, tons of goodies, and a lot going on all the time. I grew up in a home where money was super-tight, and Christmas was, by societal standards, pretty small. As adults, my husband doesn’t really care much for presents or personal belongings. I, on the other hand, go through a kind of holiday guilt, wondering if I got my children “enough.” I buy, bring home, wrap, and nearly always tuck something away for a birthday or later Christmas, realizing I over-shopped … Continue reading
