Have You Let Yourself Go?

One big complaint many spouses have, is that their husbands or wives have let themselves go. This may mean gaining weight, becoming soft and out of shape, not taking care of health, being cranky due to lack of sleep, or a host of other things.

It happens before we know it. Five pounds turns into fifteen. That touch of gray begins to look like we haven't had a touch up in months (often because we haven't). That skipped haircut leaves split ends, making hair dull and lifeless. Skipping the moisturizer leads to rough, dry, patches of skin.

It's not just about appearance, however, there are other concerns. If you stay up too late each night, you may not be a very pleasant person to be around in the morning. If you frequently don't feel well, and don't bother to do anything about it, you may not seem to care much about yourself. If you don't care about yourself, how can you care for anyone else?

Maybe, you're burned out, so you've let responsibilities go. The house is a mess, you don't feel like cooking any more, or maybe you've let things slide at work or you've taken off more days or hours than you should. Now, the finances are also suffering, and you're spouse has to make up the difference.

Everyone experiences some sense of burnout, but it's what we do about it that matters. If you find that you are letting yourself go, in these or other ways, do something today to start turning it around. It's okay to start small, but keep going.

  • Do something nice for yourself, something that makes you feel good.
  • Put in some extra effort at work, and reward yourself for the accomplishment.
  • Force yourself to do that chore of finish that project you dread. You'll get it out of the way.
  • Get a great night's sleep.
  • Go for a walk and start adding more steps to your daily routine for exercise.
  • Get a check up.
  • Get rid of your worst looking shirt and purchase a new one.
  • Schedule a visit with your stylist.
  • Talk about what's bothering you.
  • Turn on some music to lift your mood.
