Getting Married Soon?

Are you getting married soon? Are you a newlywed? Are you ready for what's to come next in your life as you and your spouse begin this journey? If the answer is, no but we are doing our best. Then you, like all other couples, will benefit from a little advice. The great thing about advice, like a buffet, is that it is plentiful and you can take from it what you would and go back for more if you are still hungry. The following advice comes from numerous sources and I've collected it into the following list:

  • Attack the issue, not each other - when you have a problem or a disagreement, remember that the subject is not the other person or how they feel, but the issue that you are disagreeing on
  • Learn a sport that your spouse loves, whether you like sports or not, understanding the nature of the sport and how to play it will allow you and your spouse to always share that enjoyment
  • Commitment to marriage does not mean mind reading, always talk about what's going on and ask, not assume, what your spouse is thinking
  • Love means saying your sorry for slights real and imagined, it doesn't matter if you even understand what you may have done wrong, but always be willing to apologize for it
  • Temper the truth even if you hate is family and they make you crazy, be honest, but avoid injuring your spouse on those topics
  • Patience is the best skill you cultivate over the life of a marriage, patience for each other, patience for circumstances and patience for life
  • Your spouse is also your friend, respect that friendship and never forget that they need your love, your understanding and your respect

What other advice can you offer to newly married couples?
