Getting Remarried Can Cause Problems With Insurance

Insurance, no matter what kind, is designed to provide you and your family with some financial protection in case tragedy strikes. Getting insurance involves a whole process, taking up both time and money. After paying years of premiums, the expectation is that the insurance company will take care of you in your time of need. In some cases, getting remarried can cause serious problems with insurance. You might not be as protected as you think you are. Is your spouse in the military? There is an insurance plan called the Survivor Benefit Plan that is a program of the Department … Continue reading

Whos Who At The Wedding

It has just occurred to me that by this time next week, there will be several additions to the group of people whom I refer to as “family”. My little sister is getting married, and since she lives in Florida we get to go there for the celebration. I am excited to see her and to make the trip there with my family. While I have met my sister’s fiancé, I have never met any of his family. This will be the first time that I meet them. There’s no time like a wedding to dust off your knowledge of … Continue reading

Anti-Slavery: Today’s Fight for Tomorrow’s Freedom

As I said once before in a blog, when many Americans hear the word “slavery,” they think of African Americans being freed after the Civil War. But unfortunately, slavery is still very much a part of the world today. While researching the SlaveryFootprint.org website, I ran across the Anti-Slavery website. Anti-Slavery points out that although slavery was prohibited by the UN in 1848’s Universal Declaration of Human Rights, slavery still exists today. Modern slavery includes many different things – prostitution, bonded labor, trafficking, slavery by descent, child labor, forced labor, and forced marriage. The site estimates that as many as … Continue reading

Business Owner Seeks Younger Wife – For Better Insurance Rates

We all know that health insurance is expensive. If you knew that getting married to a much younger person could greatly reduce the cost of your health insurance, would you actually consider doing it? A small business owner, who is also a Rabbi, is giving this idea a try. There are a lot of people who cannot afford to purchase health insurance for themselves, or for their families. Businesses, especially small ones, struggle with the cost of the health insurance they offer employees. You know things are bad, economically speaking, when lawmakers are seeking solutions that will make health insurance … Continue reading

How to Keep Your Pet from Cheating on You

In keeping with the theme of the last couple of days, I couldn’t very well talk about unfaithful pets and cats adopting other people without examining ways to keep your pet from straying. Over in Marriage, infidelity is a hot topic. I’m of the camp that believes one of the factors that causes a husband to stray is because he’s not getting enough attention at home. I figured based on other people interviewed in the MSNBC.com article “Getting dogged: When your pet cheats on you” by Kim Campbell Thornton that it would stand to reason that’s why pets cheat too. … Continue reading

Driving the Family Germ-mobile

“If you’re a soccer mom, you’re essentially driving a germ-mobile.” Or so claims a microbiologist from the University of Arizona who conducted a study on bacteria levels in people’s vehicles. The conclusion: Most of us are driving around in motorized toilets. Scratch that. Actually, what this germ expert concluded was that in most cases the toilets in our homes are cleaner than the interior of our vehicles. Food for thought the next time you consider loading up the kids for a ride to grandma’s house. Before you start bleaching your dashboard take a look at the details of the study: … Continue reading

The Duggar’s Welcome Another Female to the Family

Hold on! It’s not what you think… Michelle Duggar did NOT give birth to baby No. 18 yet (she is due in January). Rather, the famously fertile family from Arkansas is a bit bigger today thanks to 20-year-old Josh Duggar getting hitched over the weekend. It’s the first wedding in the Duggar family since mom Michelle and dad Jim Bob wed more than two decades ago. According to a Florida newspaper, Josh, the oldest of the Duggar’s 17 children, married 20-year-old Anna Keller in an intimate ceremony Friday night. The young couple reportedly met at a home-schoolers’ conference in 2006 … Continue reading

The Green Mouse?

I’ve always found Disney to be on the cutting edge of social and technological change. This was the dream of Walt and that dream continues into the 21st century. Conservation has always been a commitment of Disney. In April, the last of Disney’s resorts have come up to the green stardards of the Florida’s Greed Lodging Program. Disney’s Yacht & Beach Club (hey, I was married there in their rose garden in 1999) was the last of the 23 resorts to come up to the green standards. Disney World’s 23 resorts have now all received Florida Department of Environmenal Protection’s … Continue reading

Do You Ever Dream About Your Spouse’s Family?

The other night I had a really tender dream about Wayne’s dad. He passed away several years ago rather unexpectedly. He was still young too. Only 60 and as feisty as ever. As you might expect, it was a huge blow to Wayne. He was really close to his dad and was shocked by the sudden loss. However, only six days prior we had spent a wonderful week with him. Tom (Wayne’s dad), Grandma Pryor (Tom’s mom), Keith (Wayne’s brother), Peach (Wayne’s aunt), and Kevin and Jerry Jr. (Wayne’s cousins) had all flown out to Florida so we could go … Continue reading

Ready, Set, Watch!

Yesterday was the first official day of the 2007-08 TV season. This week is an especially critical time for networks as they unveil their newest contenders in the battle to win over as many viewers as possible. In a departure from years past this season’s new shows are straying from the reality genre and offering more of an escape from real life. Supernatural and science fiction genres featuring characters who use their “extraordinary” gifts to conquer the bad guys are getting the most buzz this season. In other words, several networks are hoping to share in the success of NBC’s … Continue reading
