Finally Found The Dress

I should have known that the relationship with the in-laws was not going to be great, I would have been happy with tolerable. Seeing as I had no friends in Texas yet I had very few choices when it came to choosing someone to go wedding dress shopping with me. I chose to take my fiancee with me; I know superstition says he should not have seen me in my dress before the wedding day. I do not believe in superstition. I wanted my one friend in Texas to come with me and he did. I was not looking for … Continue reading

Dressing a Daughter’s Room

We had quite an adventure this past weekend. Now that Molly’s room is almost finished, we just need to address the windows, or should I say “dress” the windows. We also have a closet door to dress as well. Here is what we have been doing and where we found a way to make custom curtains when I don’t yet sew. Getting Molly’s room ready has been a long process that was frequently interrupted by other house projects that took priority, such as new flooring in the family room, felling trees in the yard, and fixing plumbing leaks. We can … Continue reading

Travel Tidbits: Chatty Charlie Gets Busted and Parking Violator Finally Pays Up

Let this be a warning to all of you travelers who are obsessed with your cellphones: Airlines mean business when they tell you to shut up. It’s a lesson one Southwest Airlines passenger learned the hard way on Monday. For some reason 50-year-old Joe David Jones refused to get off his cellphone during a flight from Austin to Dallas and he’s now having to pay the price for it. According to police reports, Southwest flight attendants repeatedly asked Jones to hang up his cellphone while the plane was in mid-air, but he refused to comply. When the jet landed at … Continue reading

Dress Code Conflict: Student Wins in Court

Some sort of dress code is usually in effect at every school. Some dress codes are stricter than others. While some schools require uniforms other schools only have restrictions on things such as length of shorts and the type of shirts that can be worn. One high school student took her dress code issue to the courts. On her third attempt to get a rule of the school reversed, he was successful. The Neuqua High School student wanted to wear an anti-gay shirt in response to the annual Day of Silence that the school observes. On this day, students may … Continue reading

Disney Redefining Princesses

Disney’s gotten a lot of criticism, from me and from plenty of others, for its dedication to princesses.  But today I’m here to give Disney some serious kudos for its latest Princess-related ad.  You can watch the clip on YouTube. It’s just awesome.  If you’re not able to watch it at the moment, the ad features a variety of girls, from all ages, races, and backgrounds, and the voice over repeats that “I’m a princess.”  But in between saying that, the narration says other fantastic things as well, such as “it’s important to stand up for myself.  It’s more important … Continue reading

Shoes for My Daughter Part II

Having purchased several pairs of shoes (granted they were all from a consignment shop for children’s gently used clothes) for my infant daughter that she either only wore once or twice or not at all, I decided to let the whole shoe wearing urge go for the summer.  My daughter spent the remainder of the warm weather blissfully and gleefully shoe free. Once the weather started to turn cool, I was on the hunt again for footwear for my daughter (who at this point was ten months old and has already taken her first steps). This time around, however, I … Continue reading

The Art of Recycling Halloween Costume Ideas

(The purr-fect costume??) You are looking at my daughter’s darling Halloween cat costume. The one she swears she’ll never wear again. She wore the cute and cuddly getup a couple of years ago during her All Hallows’ Eve candy collecting adventures, but don’t look for her to ever go trick-or-treating again dressed as a fluffy feline because “only little kids dress up as cats.” P.S. She’s eight. I spent the better half of last night explaining to her that she most certainly could dress-up as a cat again if she desired. We’d just tailor the outfit to make it look … Continue reading

Disney Characters in North Korea

The kind of thing Disney’s after This is a story too bizarre not to report: on Monday July 9 Mickey Mouse, along with other Disney characters, appeared on North Korean television with the country’s new leader, Kim Jong-Un (son of Kim Jong-Il). No, Disney is not sending representatives to the isolationist country. These were images of Walt Disney Company characters used without permission. The use presents some interesting questions that reflect upon Disney’s own corporate policy. The New York Times’ Media Decoder explains. You see, Disney is very strict about unauthorized use of its properties. The company complained to Mexican … Continue reading
