The Marriage Blog Week in Review for February 11-17

Due to the observance of a major love holiday last week, the main focus of many articles in Marriage revolved around that. Here’s how Lyn and I covered all things Valentine’s Day and beyond. Monday, February 11 I wondered what mattered more to you with rings, quality or quantity. Lyn observed the kind of realms talk show and relationships spark around Valentine’s Day. Tuesday, February 12 I listed places for the romantically challenged to find online help. Lyn reflected on how some people just need somebody because they can’t stand being single. Wednesday, February 13 I weighed in with Rule … Continue reading

Valentine’s Day Proposalversaries: Facts and Figures

Yes, today is Valentine’s Day, but if you happened to get proposed to on Valentine’s Day then it’s also your Proposalversary. I was curious about how many couple’s get engaged on Valentine’s Day so I tried to find some statistics. I was kind of surprised by what I learned. For another, there were at least two other days I hadn’t even considered that were quite popular proposal days. I listed these and all my other revelations below. Did You … Continue reading

The Search for the Perfect Engagement Ring

I’ll never forget going to pick out my engagement ring with Wayne. Neither of us really knew what we were doing, but I have to give Wayne credit. He actually researched what the “Four C’s” was all about so he could talk the diamond lingo. I, on the other hand, was clueless. Carats? Clarity? Color? What the heck was that all about? Just pick a pretty ring and be done with it. The saleslady brought out all kinds of settings for us to choose from. I picked all the modest diamonds. Basically they weren’t much more than chips. Wayne kept … Continue reading

Brittany Murphy Breaks Off Engagement

Poor Brittany Murphy, it seems she is always unlucky in love. If you remember, several years ago, she was involved in a highly publicized romance with Ashton Kutcher. The two met and started their romance while filming “Just Married.” Suddenly, they seemed to be in front of every camera in Hollywood, the epitome of “young and in love.” Then, almost as quickly as the romance began, it ended. And it did not end nicely either. Brittany threw a few ugly remarks Ashton’s way on a talk show, but he had already moved on to dating current wife, Demi Moore. Not … Continue reading

Online Popularity Contest

A warning to parents: Excessive use of Facebook = depressed kids. The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) believes that equation to be 100% true. So, all you moms and dads with Facebook obsessed kids: Be afraid. Be very afraid. I am not on Facebook. Consequently, my second grader has no clue that the social networking site exists. Thus, zero exposure to Facebook = darn happy kid. Despite this fact, I will try to remain humble and not turn this post into an exercise in self-validation. Rather, I will just stick to the facts. According to the AAP, a link exists … Continue reading

Can Old Newspapers Help With Genealogy Research?

There are many different ways in which genealogists can track down the facts that they need in order to create an accurate record of their family’s history. The variety of record sources that genealogists use can sometimes take genealogy newcomers by surprise. For example, you may not be aware of just how much information you can find in old newspapers. Obituaries, birth notices, and marriage and engagement announcements are just the beginning of what you can find. Newspapers contain many stories about the lives of the people in the area where they are published. If you are fortunate enough to … Continue reading

Choosing a Wedding Date

What made you choose your wedding date? Did that date have special meaning for you or was it a case of what was available? Does the date matter? For us, it was a date already meaningful. It was a date I already had inscribed on one ring -the friendship ring Mick gave me. Exactly two years to the date and as close as we could get it to the hour and minute that Mick put my engraved friendship ring on my right hand, he was putting my wedding ring on the left ring finger of my left hand. It was … Continue reading

Scarlett Johansson Weds and Uma Thurman Hooks Up with Furry Friends

Scarlett Johansson is now officially Mrs. Ryan Reynolds. The two good-looking Hollywood stars tied the knot in Canada this weekend, according to Johansson’s rep. Reports say the intimate wedding took place Saturday evening at a remote wilderness resort outside Vancouver. Guests included Scarlett’s mother and brother. Few details on the ceremony were released, though that should come as no surprise since the actors are not big on publicizing their private lives. In fact, 23-year-old Johansson and 31-year-old Reynolds typically go out of their way to throw off reporters and the paparazzi. The couple, who have been dating since Spring 2007, … Continue reading
