Remarriage From a Child’s View

When I was eleven years old my mother remarried. At first I was pretty excited about her dating this guy. I finally had that father figure I had craved as a child. Then all of the sudden I realized that I no longer had my mother all to myself anymore. I felt like I was losing her. It had been just me and my mom for several years. We did everything together. We were inseparable. We stayed up late watching old movies in bed, we went to art museums together, we read books together, we went to the symphony together. … Continue reading

Ribbon of Years – Robin Lee Hatcher

Miriam is just one of those girls that grabs your heart and doesn’t let go. At least, that’s what Jacob has always thought, and he ought to know – he’s been in love with her since he was eight years old. She’s tried to make it clear that she can never care for him that way, but that doesn’t keep him from trying, even if it means being her accomplice as she steals a movie poster from the glass case in front of the movie theater. The year is 1936, and Miriam has decided that she’s going to be an … Continue reading

What’s it Like to Parent Two Mentally Ill Children?

Several years ago, Susan and Michael Schofield learned that their daughter, Jani, had been born with schizophrenia. The couple had a second child, a son named Bodhi. At first, they believed that Bodhi was born without any mental illnesses. As time went on, they learned that Bodhi also has some mental health issues. What’s it like to parent not one, but two, mentally ill children? Michael and Susan Schofield decided to publicly share their story about parenting a child with schizophrenia when their daughter, Jani, was six years old. As an infant, Jani did not sleep for more than half … Continue reading

Vegetarian Athletes

Athletes are normally very particular about their bodies and what they put in them. After all, without healthy bodies, it is hard to do what they do. But, I realized there are quite a few athletes that eat a strictly vegetarian diet. Some people wonder if a no meat diet is good for you. It certainly hasn’t done these athletes any harm: Bill Pearl Pearl is a four-time Mr. Universe. He didn’t become a vegetarian until he was 39, but guess what? He won his final Mr. Universe two years later, at age 41. Bode Miller Skiier Miller not only … Continue reading

HPV Vaccine Legislation in the United States

The HPV vaccine for young women has been a subject of debate and legislation around the United States over the last few years. First, some background: in 2006, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved Gardasil, a vaccine that protects against four different types of human papillomavirus (two that cause cervical cancer and two that cause genital warts). The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommended that the vaccine be given to all eleven and twelve year old girls. Since then, different states have taken different approaches to the vaccine. In 2007, the state of Virginia and the District … Continue reading

Could You Let Your Spouse Die?

Could you let your spouse die? I have a friend who had to watch his wife die of a terminal illness and I know how hard he found it and wished he could do anything to prevent it. But to knowingly and willfully let his spouse die as this man has been convicted of doing when he could have done something to prevent it, what sort of man would do this? This man pleaded guilty to manslaughter and was sentenced after letting his wife die on their honeymoon when, according to reports. Again you wonder, what sort of marriage was … Continue reading

Cher: The Original Diva – Part 1

The Lindsay Lohans, Britney Spears, Jennifer Lopez’s, and yes, even Madonna’s of the world have one woman to thank for their being able to combine singing and acting careers – Cher. Yes, long before most of them were even born, Cher was doing it her own way, no matter what anyone said. Oh sure, Liz Taylor had grace and charm on the screen, but you never heard about Liz in the recording studio, did you? Most of today’s kids probably think it was Madonna that broke that door down, but I would have to disagree – I think Madonna took … Continue reading

Happily Married Caucasian Women Sleep Better

Have you ever heard the saying “never go to sleep angry”? Well it seems that many women tend to follow this rule. I know that when I have a lot on my mind it can be very difficult to get a good night’s rest. A recent research study shows that women who have better marital lives also sleep better. Many women tend to worry and get less sleep when things are not right with their lives or their marriage. The study was carried out by Wendy Troxel from the University of Pittsburgh. It was conducted with 1938 married women. They … Continue reading

What’s Making My Hair Gorgeous: Fekkai or Bom Dia?

Something remarkable has happened atop my head the last couple of months: my hair looks shinier, healthier, more colorful than it has in years. (Like in over 20 years, since I was a teenager and my hair always looked healthy.) I haven’t colored it since last summer so I know it’s not that. In fact, when I first noticed this hair transformation it was around the time I should have been noticing the few grays I have and thinking about coloring again. Instead, I noticed my hair had changed color on its own. Not entirely changed, but the brown was … Continue reading
