Road Trip Sanity Savers

Keeping the peace in a vehicle filled with cranky kids is no small task, and with the summer travel season kicking off this weekend, now is the time to arm yourself with weapons against the “Are we there yet?” blues. With advancements in technology, the family car often morphs into a mobile living room complete with DVD players, video games, and smartphones. These days, most parents don’t dare travel long distances without arming kids with portable digital devices, from iPads to portable PlayStations. These electronic entertainment systems are a far cry from playing 20 Questions in the back of a … Continue reading

Learning from the Mistakes of Others

We all make mistakes. Some of us make a lot more than others. But this is okay, because we learn from them … or at least, we try to learn from them, right? I know I tend to run into the same brick wall a few times before I really “get it,” but then I shake it off, make a mental note, and try to do better next time. That’s what life is about—having experiences, becoming stronger because of them, and moving on. But we don’t really need to make every mistake in the book in order to learn, do … Continue reading

I Hate Pregnancy

I have to be honest. I don’t like being pregnant that much. I don’t have it that bad though. Some women suffer from serious morning sickness. I didn’t. Some women get put on bed rest. Not me. But, I still don’t care for being pregnant. I’m a whiner. I have been my whole life, so being pregnant just gives me entirely too many reasons to complain. I do get sick during the first trimester. I never threw up, but did get very nauseous during the early evening hours. Other than that, the first trimester just brought with it extreme fatigue. … Continue reading

Do You Ever Regret Getting Married?

When a marriage takes a rocky turn, it’s not unusual for one or both partners to wonder what their lives would have been like if they had chosen not to get married. They might imagine themselves as swinging singles, successful in their careers, going out and partying every weekend without worrying over the little trivialities of life. But these are the wistful thinkings of a person who is unhappy in their marriage, rather than reality. Let’s take a look at some statistics. If you are married, you are likely to be more successful in your career, earn more, and have … Continue reading

Think Pink This Christmas

There’s nothing like shopping for Halloween candy in Target while being stared down by Rudolph, Frosty and Santa in all their inflatable glory. Long live commercialism. Given that Christmas displays have been up in various stores since the beginning of the month, I didn’t see it inappropriate to blog about holiday gift ideas in the days before Halloween. If you can’t beat ‘em, join ‘em, right? Conformity seems to spreading this year. Believe it or not, we’re thinking pink around here this Christmas. Thanks to a delightfully charming treasure chest of Pinkalicious goodies, my true-blue, anti-frou frou daughter is looking … Continue reading

Believer Married to Non Believer- Part 2

Today I’m continuing with more tips about dealing with an unbelieving spouse when you are a believer.Instead of preaching at them, a better way is given in 1 Peter 3:1-4. Don’t talk about what you believe, but instead show it by the way you live. Let your love and actions speak to them and trust God to be at work changing their heart and attitudes. Remember God wants what is best for you and your spouse. Remember too, that it is God’s work to change your spouse’s attitude and heart, not yours. Hard as it may be to accept, remember … Continue reading

The Garage Sale- Part 2

Some experts suggest you shouldn’t price items in a garage sale but let people offer what they think the items are worth. These experts claim people will often offer more than you would have put on the item. Others say to make sure items are clearly priced. It may be negotiable but it is a starting point. I adhere to this idea. If I went to a garage sale where I had to ask the price of everything I would quickly get fed up and leave. Be prepared to negotiate on price. Those who go to garage sales regularly usually … Continue reading

Preparing For Travel Delays

The spring storm that delayed our return from Easter vacation last week (we got stuck on the Illinois-Wisconsin border in 9 inches of snow and 45 m.p.h. winds) has finally hit the East Coast. Currently, the area is experiencing vicious winds, heavy snow and large amounts of rain. And, according to meteorologists, it’s only going to get worse. That’s bad news for travelers (the Boston Marathon is tomorrow), especially ones scheduled to return home today (according to news reports, more than 500 flights have already been cancelled). Mother Nature is often the blame for travel delays, and when bad weather … Continue reading
