Cat People vs. Dog People

I’ve already debunked the whole cats and dogs can never get along theory. What about whether you’re a cat person or a dog person, and what that says about your personality? I recently caught part of a NOVA documentary exploring that very thing, and I wish I’d seen more of it. The opening was full of cat people and dog people talking about the respective attributes of their favorite mammals, before examining what life is like at home for each of them. Although the concept was fascinating, I felt a little put out. What about me? I love dogs and … Continue reading

Greatest American Dog: The Final Episode

Somehow, despite my problem, I made it through the entire series of the Greatest American Dog. (Except for the couple of episodes I missed while on vacation, as I mentioned in my last Greatest American Dog commentary.) A Dog is An Extension of The Owner When they were trying to narrow it down from the final three to the final two, the judges were evaluating the owner as much as the dog. They were pretty critical of how the owners were with their dogs. As Laurie put it, it came down to a battle of the training methods. (Which again … Continue reading

Depression Is Still a Stigma

Despite government educational campaigns costing millions and many famous faces coming out of the closet to reveal that the “black dog” has figured prominently on their lives, the stigma surrounding depression and mental illness in general lives on. In a recent Australian survey published in the journal Biomed Central, it was found that 20%, or one in five people, said they would not work with someone suffering from depression. This is despite the fact that depression alone affects a significant proportion of the population. The survey was conducted by Professor Kathy Griffith and Professor Helen Christiansen of the Australian National … Continue reading

Pets and Repair People

Photo by Thiago Felipe Festa This week I finally got around to calling GE to schedule a repair on our dishwasher, which was part of their massive dishwasher recall. The day before the technician was scheduled to come out, a computer called to verify that I wanted to keep the appointment. After I confirmed I did, the computer voice informed me that if I was a household with a dog or cat I either needed to stay on the line or press another button (I forget which it was now) to hear some important information about how my pets could … Continue reading

Whether you are a beginner or used to working out, you may experience dizziness, disorientation or vertigo while you are working out on a cardiovascular exercise machine whether it’s a treadmill, a stationary bike or a stair master.
