Disasters and Marriage

Disasters affect relationships in one of two ways. They can bring a couple closer together as they cling to each other for support and comfort and love. Or they can produce so much anger that people turn against each other and take out their frustrations on those closest to them. This is eyes exactly what is happening in Christchurch. Reports show ‘domestic violence has surged by 50 percent after a major tremor rocked New Zealand’s second city last September.’ That tremor was ‘the prelude to Tuesday’s quake that left at least 123 dead and destroyed parts of the city centre.’ … Continue reading

Oil Spill Cancels Weddings and Angers Travelers with Insurance

The news just never gets any better with this BP oil spill, does it? The other day I blogged about the oil spill ruining vacation spots along the Gulf coast, but there’s one thing I didn’t think about – beach weddings. That’s right, the oil spill is now cancelling weddings. Meggie Fleming had her dream wedding planned for August 28th on the beach at Gulf Shores, Alabama. Now, she is planning her wedding all over again, this time close to home in Decatur, Alabama. She and her fiance Tyler Thacker had been waiting to see what was going to happen … Continue reading

Set in the Dorset village of Mellstock during the 1840s, Under the Greenwood Tree focuses on a new arrival to the village, Miss Fancy Day. She becomes the talk of the square, and three suitors step forward to ask for her hand in marriage. There is the wealthy landowner who promises silk dresses and live in maid service, the intelligent and educated Vicar who promises her the world, literally, … Continue reading

Strange Ideas about Christians

People sometime have strange ideas about Christians. Too often the media wants to lump all Christians in the one basket. So do a lot of other people. The reality is Christians are a varied lot. What they do have in common is a saving faith in the work of Christ on the cross. Some Christians will not touch alcohol. They see alcohol as a major problem in society, which it is, and one that often causes other problems making people behave in a way that they would not normally do. So they choose to abstain from alcohol. The problem occurs … Continue reading

One of the Best Things You Can Do

Another thing to talk about and one of the best things you can do for your marriage is study the bible together. As a start, I suggest getting a concordance and looking up husbands, wives and marriage and finding out what God has to say on these subjects. It will give you a clear picture of the way marriage should be. But don’t stop here. Make it a regular habit to study the bible and pray together. Meet with other married couples who are studying the same passages of scripture you are. It’s a great way of building enduring friendships, … Continue reading

Make Learning About Money Fun For Kids

When I was a little girl my brother and sisters and I played a lot of board games. We played more cards than board games, but we still played board games. In Monopoly we had to figure out the value of property and how to get a complete set. You didn’t learn a lot about finance, though, even if you were the banker. One of my favorite games to play was The Game of Life. The Game of Life was not an entirely accurate representation of what adult life is about, but it was pretty close. You went to school, … Continue reading

Buying Gifts for In-Laws

When it comes to buying gifts for in-laws, it invariably gets left to the woman to do the gift buying. This can be fine if she has a good relationship with them and knows what they like. If she does not, it can be disastrous. There is nothing harder that trying to buy a gift for someone when you don’t know what they like. Often you don’t know what they like, so you wander around the shops. But it’s near to impossible to know what to buy if you haven’t got a clue what you’re looking for. You can spend … Continue reading

The Perfect Anniversary Gift

Anniversary presents can cause trouble, especially if they’re not what the person was expecting or hoping for. In a magazine I had to chuckle as I read about a woman who was delighted by her husband’s suggestion of a gift subscription to GoodReading magazine. She went on to explain two reasons why his gift was so appreciated. The first was because in the past his presents for special occasions left a lot to be desired. In fact the editor of the magazine had to censor her comments in the letter which gives a pretty fair idea of what she thought … Continue reading

Love Each Other As If Every Day Is The Only Day.

‘Love each other as if every day is the only day.’ These words came out of the novel True Blue which I read recently. As you’ve probably gathered by now, I’m huge reader and Luanne Rice is a favorite author since I discovered her last year. As I read or watch TV or movies, I tend to have one eye on things I things I can use for blogs. This was one of those comments. But why love each other as is if every day is the only day? One of the reasons is that we don’t know what tomorrow … Continue reading

Before Disaster Comes Show Your Love

Australia is reeling. A staggering number of lives have been lost as a result of the bushfires that have been rampaging for days. Whole towns have been wiped out. Many people have lost their homes and possessions in the worst disaster to hit Australia as bush fires rage through parts of Victoria. Fires have also hit New South Wales but to date no lives have been lost there. Other than the lives of loved ones, what would you try and save in case of a fire? It’s hard to imagine, isn’t it? As I started to think about what I’d … Continue reading
