Destination Weddings: Do or Don’t?

Writing about Disney Cruise Weddings/Vow Ceremonies made me think about destination weddings.  Given that I wanted my wedding to be as small and simple as possible, it’s difficult for me to relate to those interested in having a destination wedding. For me, the concept only seems to make sense if the bride or the groom actually hails from the area in which they’re getting married.  Maybe he or she was born abroad, or on the other side of the country.  It’s one thing to ask your guests to spend a lot on travel expenses just because you want to get … Continue reading

What Wealthy People Do

I have always admired wealthy people. While I do not personally know many of them, I am always inspired when I learn about the ways that people that are wealthy acquire and keep their fortunes. Today, I learned some very interesting things about millionaires. While the constant media coverage of Hollywood divorces may cause us to associate being rich and famous with being doomed to marital failure, many wealthy people marry only once. It is uncertain exactly how much of an influence this has had on these couples’ ability to be wealthy, but it can’t hurt – divorce can be … Continue reading

Oil Spill Cancels Weddings and Angers Travelers with Insurance

The news just never gets any better with this BP oil spill, does it? The other day I blogged about the oil spill ruining vacation spots along the Gulf coast, but there’s one thing I didn’t think about – beach weddings. That’s right, the oil spill is now cancelling weddings. Meggie Fleming had her dream wedding planned for August 28th on the beach at Gulf Shores, Alabama. Now, she is planning her wedding all over again, this time close to home in Decatur, Alabama. She and her fiance Tyler Thacker had been waiting to see what was going to happen … Continue reading

Weddings with a Difference

Recently I came across several weddings with a difference. The first one is for dogs. No, I am not kidding! I wish I was. What is our world coming to when we can have things like doggie weddings? For $5000 you can have a doggie wedding for your pet, complete with weddings gown. I love our two dogs but this whole idea is so sick. To me it is making a mockery of marriage and all it should mean. In the second wedding in an effort to make it a bit different, the bride to the astonishment of nearby fishermen, … Continue reading

New to Marriage Blog but Not to Marriage

I’m popping in to say, ‘Hi’ and feeling excited to be joining Courtney on the marriage blog. My husband and I have been married for over 40 years, so hopefully I’ve learned something about marriage in that time to share with you all. Since May 2007 I have been writing in the Christian area and popping in for the occasional guest movie review. A number of my blogs in Christian have covered marriage. You can check some of them out below. Much of my life involves writing. I’m fortunate to have a husband who fully supports me. He thinks I … Continue reading

Holiday Weddings

Planning a wedding can be difficult for some people. There are many preparations and ideas to consider about your wedding. While the location is a major component, the time of year is also very important to many people. Some people like to plan their wedding around a holiday or special time of the year. They feel that the timing adds meaning to their marriage and wedding. Other people prefer for their wedding to be the only special event at the time. They want their wedding to stand out and be separate from other special events. If you do decide that … Continue reading

Weddings can be outlandishly expensive, and it is not unusual to spend $20,000 or more for the big day. But, there are some easy ways to save. You can try one idea or all, depending on what your expenses are and where you want to save. The nice thing about these ideas is that they are pretty flexible, so you can incorporate what works for you. Keep reading for the first tip on my list. “Hire” your friends and relatives. This is a time-honored tradition when budgeting for weddings. It is sort of the “it takes a village” mindset. Ask … Continue reading

Frugal Weddings: Skip the Prime Rib Plate and Try a Pasta Bar Instead

I’ve been told by more than a few people that my wedding was one of the best they’ve ever attended. Trust me, I am not bragging. My wedding will never make the cover of Brides. It wasn’t elaborate, and it wasn’t fancy. In fact, it was quite simple…but fun and meaningful at the same time. Did you know that the average wedding costs $30,000? (Thankfully, ours was 1/10th that amount). One of the biggest expenses at most weddings is the reception. In my last post, I offered a frugal tip for table décor and wedding cakes. This time, I am … Continue reading

Christmas Weddings – Let’s Go A Wassailing

There is something very dickensian about a wedding at Christmas and I think were I to plan a wedding now, I’d intertwine it into the Christmas season and take advantage of all the beautiful ideas, decorations and music available within the Christmas season. However, planning a Christmas wedding comes with a whole set of other problems, including involving other people in planning the wedding in and around the holiday season. Dickensian Wedding When you hear the word Dickensian, chances are you think of old fashioned street lamps, beautiful clothing, bonnets and even snowy scenes with horse drawn sleighs. You wouldn’t … Continue reading

Why Do Weddings Cost So Much?

Why do weddings cost so much? How can you possibly plan to save up for a wedding when a wedding thirty years ago didn’t require a year’s salary. So how do you plan for it? The first step is to calculate what a mid-sized car costs. That’s about what you can expect to spend on a wedding. Currently, an average wedding costs about $20,000 to $30,000. Thirty years ago, that cost was closer to $3,000 to $4,000. Thirty years from now, the average cost of a wedding could easily be $100,000. Okay, take a deep breath. Remember, adjusting for inflation, … Continue reading
