Love Makes a Family

Logan got a little spoiled with books this Christmas, thanks to Mommy’s thrift shop rummaging. I was tempted to be an indian giver when I fell in love with one of them, but luckily he is a good sharer. As we read the book I felt as if it was written just for us, so much so that it brought me to tears. It is about a single mother who is raising a little girl on her own. One day the little girl comes home from school and decides she wants a “real family,” and storms off next door. They … Continue reading

Book Review: Families Are Different

My last blog reviewed two books on families which showcase the diversity of families in gorgeous photographs of families, both doing everyday things and celebrating special events. Families Are Different was written and illustrated by Nina Pelligrini, a mother of two adopted daughters who said this book was inspired by feelings expressed by one of her daughters. The book’s characters are two daughters from Korea and their two white parents. With its simply-drawn illustrations and its matter-of-fact narration by one of children, the book is well-suited to younger children but makes a point that will be appreciated by older children … Continue reading

I’m In Love… With bumGenius Diapers

It took my husband and I quite awhile to decide which route we were going to take when it came to cloth diapers. After much research and deliberating, we decided on the bumGenius 3.0 One-Size Cloth Diapers. It may have been the best decision we’ve ever made. I can honestly say I don’t have a single complaint about these diapers. They are awesome. First of all, they are adorable. Yes, they are bulkier than disposables, but they come in an array of colors: yellow, orange, white, as well as different shades of green, pink, and blue. Our baby happens to … Continue reading

Different Kinds of Love

There are many different kinds of love. One is love for country. That is especially relevant today for Australians and New Zealanders, as we remember our Anzacs, and those who gave the ultimate sacrifice, sacrificing their lives in war so that we can live in freedom and in peace. There’s family love. We saw a lot of that as hundreds of people gathered at HMAS Cresswell navy base at dawn to remember loved ones who had been killed or injured in war. There were those remembering husbands, fathers, grandfathers, wives and mothers who served in the defense forces. Later in … Continue reading

Catalog Gifts for Cats and the People Who Love Them

Yesterday I listed some gifts for dogs and the people who love from a couple different catalogs. Today I’m going to do the same things for cat people. From Femail Creations Catffeinated Mug: If you’ve got any cat lovers who also happen to be coffee lovers on your holiday shopping list, they might get a big jolt out of this cup. $14. You Can’t Own a Cat decoration: This caught my eye because it looks like something from times gone by. (Like something from the turn of the 20th century perhaps.) But then I looked closer and saw the quote: … Continue reading

Month in Review: May in the Adoption Blog, Part One

This month I reported on several conversations I’ve had with my kids. Three of them were basically the “how babies are made” conversations, humorous but revealing insights into what my kids thought at different ages. You can read what I responded at each age and decide if you do, or don’t, want to base my answers on yours! First I had to deal with my older son’s questions about babies and his shock to realize that not all of them (including himself!) were Korean. This story is told in Where Babies Come From, or, Don’t Fall Asleep on an Airplane. … Continue reading

What Love Is: Learning Long Marriage Secrets from Families.com Members

Earlier this year I committed myself to making the best of Marriage in ‘08. I planned to do that by accentuating the positive and examining tools of the trade others used in their marriages. Especially long lasting marriages. I’m still on that mission, but I’ve already learned a lot. And a lot of it has been gleaned right here from other Families.com members. A Little Bit of This and a Little Bit of That The very first thing I realized was actually the last of the four rules I wrote earlier this year: One Size Doesn’t Fit All. This is … Continue reading

I Love Coffee! – Susan Zimmer

I Love Coffee! by Susan Zimmer is such a fun book. You’ll learn all about the history of coffee, how to make a perfect cup, and find recipes for over 100 specialty coffee drinks! Best of all, the recipes seem fairly easy. The first part of this book is devoted to learning about coffee. It covers all kinds of things I never knew about the different types of coffee beans, the countries that grow coffee, and how it is harvested and processed. There are even directions for roasting your own coffee beans. You’ll also find guidelines for choosing, grinding, blending … Continue reading

Why I Love Peanut Butter!

Back in my school days, a peanut butter sandwich was my least favorite lunch. I just didn’t appreciate it! But these days, I love peanut butter — and here’s why. Peanut butter is full of protein — around eight grams of protein per serving. That helps you feel fuller longer. Peanut butter has fiber — around two grams of fiber per serving. Fiber helps your body run smoothly. Peanut butter has vitamin E — an antioxidant that helps clean free radicals out of your body. Peanut butter has magnesium — a mineral that helps build bones and may be key … Continue reading

Different Kinds of Hair Loss

There are many different kinds of alopecia, also known as hair loss. Involutional alopecia is the gradual thinning of hair with age. This is a natural condition! As you age, more and more hair follicles go into their resting phase. The hairs that remain are shorter and fewer in number. Androgenic alopecia is a genetic condition that can affect both men and women — you may know it as male pattern baldness or female pattern baldness. In men, hair loss can start in the teens or early twenties, and comes with a receding hairline and gradual hair loss from the … Continue reading
