More about Covenant Marriages

In one of my last articles I began discussing the three types of marriages that were describing in some of my recent reading. The first type that I talked about was the marriage of convenience where the partners seemed to share nothing, have little bonding, and have separate lives. The second marriage type was a marriage of codependency in which the partners share everything and have no life outside of the marriage. In this marriage one partner is often seen submissive to the other. The final type of marriage that will be discussed in this article is the covenant marriage. … Continue reading

Marriage Types: Covenant

Many years ago there was only one type of marriage. It was the traditional husband and wife marriage, which began with a wedding and ended with happily ever after (or so we thought). We now know that all marriages and couples are not designed this way. There are many different people in this world and many different types of relationships. Therefore, there are also different types of marriages. In my next couple of articles I will explore some traditional and some nontraditional couples and their marriages. For some couples marriage simply just is not enough. They want a commitment even … Continue reading

Marriage in the News: Covenant Marriages & Texas Legislation

This seems like some heavy subject material to bring up this morning, but this landed in my inbox and I couldn’t help but bring it up for discussion. Recently, I talked about the proposed marriage license legislation in Nebraska. The legislation proposes that for every couple who goes through 10 hours of marriage education then they would only need to pay $30 for a marriage license and if they don’t take the class, then they’ll need to pay $100 for their marriage license. I thought the idea was worth exploring as a model for its effect on marriage. I still … Continue reading

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints View of Family

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has its own view of what a family is. This is described in a proclamation to the world that was issued by the First Presidency and the Council of the Twelve Apostles in 1995. Here is what it said: We, THE FIRST PRESIDENCY of the Twelve Apostles of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, solemnly proclaim that marriage between a man and a woman is ordained of God and that the family is central to the Creator’s plan for the eternal destiny of His children. IN THE PREMORTAL REALM, spirit … Continue reading

Lasting marriages are created when the following components are present: The husband and wife respect each other. They respect the marriage covenant and all that it represents. More Marriage Types

In a recent book that I was reading the author described marriage as existing in three styles or types. In her opinion marriage could take on only three different forms. Those were convenience, codependency, and covenant. The first, a convenience marriage, is a marriage that is built around money and sex. The two partners do not share an emotional bind. They are in the marriage for superficial reasons. In most cases the couple is unhappy but stays in the marriage for the security or due to the fear of change. The two may be very social and have a high … Continue reading

Will Smith Says Divorce is not an Option

There are many celebrity marriage tales in which the couple splits or files for divorce very soon after marrying. It is almost the Hollywood standard that your marriage should not last over a few years. While several different articles have been written about specific celebrity marriage break ups and why Hollywood marriages do not last, it was refreshing to read an article on one star that is out to make his marriage last a lifetime. Will Smith, actor and singer, has made his commitment to his wife and vows to keep the commitment strong. He says the way to make … Continue reading
