Concentrate on the Good

Yesterday, several friends were talking about a show they’d seen on TV that morning. It raised the point about what are the worst faults you spouse has in bed. People it seemed were quite happy to get on television and put their spouse down for their faults whether they be snoring or they had another annoying habits. One woman went on to list a number of faults her husband had. And then thought she‘d better stop in case he was watching the show. It’s a bit late then after she’d already aired all the secrets. I couldn’t help thinking what … Continue reading

Concentrate on Now

Recently a young woman made an insightful comment about the marriages and relationships of some of her friends. ‘They’re so busy looking ahead and planning ahead, they’re not dealing with now.’ I suspect this could be a common problem in many marriages, planning a future but not dealing with the present. So how do we combat this problem? The most important thing is to keep the lines of communication open each day. Perhaps one way would be something I saw once in a movie. I can’t remember what the movie was, but as the family gathered around the table for … Continue reading

Shopping at a thrift store is just the first step to getting some major bargains. There are a couple of tricks to know to make sure that you walk away with the best merchandise for the least price. Use the colors to your advantage At the Goodwill, clothing is given a colored tag or plastic strip when it comes in the door and is put out onto the floor. There is a different color for each week, and the colors rotate. When it is time for the color to come up again, any merchandise that is already on the floor … Continue reading

Walking May Not Be Good Enough

Remember those reports that claimed getting some exercise is better than skipping out on physical fitness altogether? Well, according to new reports, that statement may need to be amended—slightly. Once upon a time (translation: a few months ago) walking was considered a decent form of exercise. But now, researchers at the University of Alberta say they have evidence that proves walking may not be enough for individuals to experience significant health benefits. According to the study’s author, generally, low-intensity activity such as walking will not provide a person marked health benefits compared to programs that occasionally elevate the intensity. Researchers … Continue reading

Single Parenting: How to Feel Good Again (Or At Least Semi-Human)

Divorced or Widowed? There is no doubt that you are not feeling yourself these days. On some days it may even be hard to get out of bed. So why bother? I will tell you why. Walk through your house. There are signs of life everywhere…scattered toys, little cups, action figures, Barbie dolls. Go into the bedrooms and see your sleeping children. That is why you must do it. Feeling good again after a divorce or the death of a spouse is like trying to put on a pair of size 6 pants when you are a size 8. It … Continue reading

Scrapbooking Blogs: Creating Content

After completing all the information in the previous article, about getting started with your own scrapbooking blog, you are finally ready to concentrate on your content. The content you choose is extremely important to keep your readership levels up and to keep people coming back for more. Obviously your content should reflect your scrapbook blog’s title. For instance, if you called it something like Scrapbooking Punch Overload, I would assume at first glance at the title, that the blog was about primarily paper punching or creating punch art. Or if you called it Snips of Paper, it would have a … Continue reading

Yes, Multitasking can be a Good Thing (in the Right Situation)

After I finished writing my last blog about multitasking, I headed off to the shower to get cleaned up for the day. As I showered, I realized that I made the fatal mistake of lumping all multitasking into one big pile, which isn’t right. First off, multitasking lends itself quite well to mundane tasks that do not require any brainpower to complete. As some of you know, I am LDS, which means twice a year I get to stay home for the weekend (woot!) and listen to talks given by the head people in the Church via the radio, Internet, … Continue reading

Good Health Doesn’t Have to be Expensive

In implementing an exercise regime recently, I saved quite a bit of money by doing a couple of things in different ways. Here are some top tips for saving money on exercise items. Look out for offers in your local budget supermarket on generic style trainers – most are suitable for walking, and low impact exercise. Its not a good idea to cut corners on high impact exercise items, so, if in doubt ask their shoe department salesmen if they can point you in the right direction. Look out for offers on Ebay/your local thrift or charity store for second … Continue reading

Praising Correctly

Who knew paying your child a compliment could be so damaging? According to researchers in the Netherlands, all praise is not created equal.  In fact, you may even harm your kid if you don’t applaud him properly. Oh, the horror! Scientists at Utrecht University claim certain types of praise have the ability to sabotage self-esteem in children with fragile egos.  The researchers categorize effort-based praise as the good type of praise and personal praise as its evil twin. For example, if your child scores a touchdown during his school football game and you shout out:  “You are the most awesome … Continue reading

Yoga and My Daughter

A couple of months ago I added yoga to my weekly workout routine in an effort to ease the strain from my typical high intensity cardio workouts and to help my husband strengthen his core since he refused to do anything but yoga.  Aside from the obvious struggles of exercise i.e. motivation, commitment, follow through, balance, endurance etc., there is the added difficulty of exercising with young children who basically demand mommy’s attention twenty four seven.  My three year old son has gotten really good about playing and getting a snack or drink of water for himself while I exercise … Continue reading
