Love Letters: Flights of Romance

How much do you know about Charles and Anne Morrow Lindbergh? For years, those names only meant one thing to me – the Lindbergh baby kidnapping. It was a scandal that shocked the nation in the early part of the twentieth century and it is a heart-breaking tale to this day. Who Were Anne Morrow & Charles Lindbergh Their love affair or storybook romance as the popular press wrote of them in their own time was not quite a fairytale. Lindbergh made history as an aviator and he was a national hero. He met Anne Morrow during a visit to … Continue reading

Love is Never Easy

Love is a powerful emotion. It binds us to others. It creates sympathy and empathy between you and another person. When you love someone deeply, you feel their pain even when you don’t understand why they are hurting. The idea that love paints the sky in soft hues and cues up the romantic score to play in the background. Love Hurts Love can leave you vulnerable to another person. Their careless remarks or even teasing ones can hurt or leave injury. When you love someone, you want what’s best for them and just seeing them smile at something you do … Continue reading

Charles & Diana: A Love Story?

We’ve been talking about marriage and wedding planning here at the Marriage blog this month and I don’t think any wedding planning would be complete without talking about some of the great weddings of the last century. And I do mean the last century, not the current one. When I think of the great weddings of the last century, one of the first weddings to come to mind is that of Charles, Prince of Wales to Lady Diana Spencer. I was just nine years old when they were married in the summer of 1981. I remember my mother waking me … Continue reading

Letting Go of the Rescue Fantasy

Let’s face it–many of us were read plenty of fairy tales when we were younger and in those fairy tales, there was generally someone doing the rescuing and someone getting rescued. Usually (but not always) it was the handsome male prince doing the rescuing while the beautiful female princess waited to be rescued. As adults, especially those of us who have been through a separation, death or divorce, we have the opportunity to get past those myths and discover a new way of living–a way of living that does not involve either waiting for someone to come along and rescue … Continue reading

Royal Marriage Law to be Abolished?

Tony Blair’s successor faces an interesting challenge in his first year as Prime Minister. There is a provision in the 1701 Act of Settlement that ensures the ascendency of protestant royals and forbids British Monarchs or their heirs from marrying Catholics. So why does Mr. Brown have to consult with constitutional advisers and repealing this part of the Act of Settlement? It may have to do with the fact that Peter Phillips, the son of Princess Anne and Mark Phillips, the eldest grandson of Queen Elizabeth II and 10th in line to the throne announced his engagement last week. Mr. … Continue reading

Courting Before Dating?

The concept of courtship or courting is really a precursor to the modern-era of dating. In ‘traditional’ courting, it is a highly structured series of activities and the rules are very specific. To court someone involves seeing him or her in a structured atmosphere, usually with a chaperone of some type. To court in modern society would involve invitations to events where the intended will be. Parties held by mutual friends, outings with other couples and so forth. These controlled ‘dates’ would allow the couple to get to know each other without undue stress of maintaining personal images. It’s worth … Continue reading

Television Wasn’t Very Supportive of Marriage This Season

It’s June, which means the standard television season is over and done with. There are a few shows to look forward over the summer, but for the most part the 2006-07 television season is over and done with. Marriage wasn’t too popular or well done during this year’s television season. From reality television’s The Real Wedding Crashers to Marriage 911 to the fictional Rules of Engagement, Desperate Housewives and ’Til Death — marriage didn’t come off as a healthy or happy institution this year. There’s a reason for that – as many marketing promoters will tell you – happy marriages … Continue reading

Oh No They Didn’t!

“South Park” creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone have always played with fire. It is often as if they do not even know the meaning of the phrase “bad taste.” Of course, for perhaps this very reason, they have garnered a loyal following. In the past, “South Park” has taken shots at George Clooney for mocking his Oscar acceptance speech for its political overtones and the Catholic Church when they showed an episode of the Virgin Mary was bleeding. One of their biggest controversies to date was with Scientology and some of its celebrity followers. Tom Cruise, John Travolta, and … Continue reading
