Finances, Work and Marriage

Who is the main financial planner in your marriage? Is it you or your spouse? According to Nancy Gibbs in her article What Women Want Now, 65% of women cite themselves as being the family’s main financial planner. 71% labeled themselves the ’family accountant.’ Mediamark Research and Intelligence tends to back up those claims saying women in the make 75% of the buying decision in home in the USA. I wonder is it any different in Australia or the U.K. Anyone care to comment? Despite the recession and economic downturn many women have more control over money than ever before. … Continue reading

Changes in Marriage in USA

The other day I touched on some of the changes that have occurred with woman and work over generations. Of course this has had a huge impact on marriage as well. Looking back to the early seventies, and in particular 1972, here are some of the differences the women’s movement has made in marriage. These statistics are taken from the Time magazine article by Nancy Gibbs based on –’a statistical look back at the journey of American Women,’ by Andréa Ford and Deidre Van Dyk. In 1972 women over the age of 15 who were married was 62%. These days … Continue reading

Gospel Doctrine: The Marriage of the King’s Son

In Matthew 22:1-14, the Savior gives a parable regarding a wedding feast. The king invited many to celebrate the forthcoming marriage of his son, but those who were invited sneered and scoffed. Some went so far as to murder the servants bearing the invitation! The king then chose to invite people from the highways, who attended the joyous occasion. The Savior then states a phrase oft-repeated in the church: “Many are called, but few are chosen.” According to Elder Bruce R. McConkie, the Savior teaches four truths: “(1) His own divine Sonship; (2) the impending destruction of Jerusalem; (3) the … Continue reading

Seasons of Testing

There are certain stages and circumstances in life that a married couple goes through in which the relationship is tested. While everyday can certainly be a test and an indicator of the strength of your relationship, some life events seem to bring out what truly lies underneath. One of the earliest circumstances I can remember my marriage being greatly tested in is about a year after we had our first child. I was pregnant with our second child when in the third month I miscarried. We each handled things very differently. Because of that, there were times we just weren’t … Continue reading

Same-Sex Couples Can Use HealthCare.gov to Find Health Insurance

This week, Maryland became the eighth state to legally allow same-sex marriage. Whenever two people get married, it leads to changes in the insurance policies of both partners. HealthCare.gov is a resource that everyone can use in order to find affordable health insurance options, including newly married same-sex couples. Connecticut, Iowa, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New York, Vermont, and the District of Columbia currently issue marriage licenses to same-sex couples. Now, the state of Maryland will, too. California recently ended the ban on same-sex marriage, (but has not yet started issuing marriage licenses for same-sex couples). Whenever two people get married, … Continue reading

Federal Government Says No to California’s Medi-Cal Co-Pays

The federal government has rejected a plan created by California Governor Jerry Brown (and other lawmakers). The plan would have required Medi-Cal to charge co-payments to the people who use this form of public health insurance. The plan may have been a way for the state of California to save money. Medi-Cal is part of the Medicaid program in California. It started in 1996. The funding comes from both the state government and the federal government. This public form of health insurance was designed to be used by low-income individuals, disabled individuals, and people who have specific types of diseases. … Continue reading

Listen Up, Men – Flirt!

We’ve talked quite a bit about marital intimacy over the last few months, and I have no doubt that as I talk to readers and listen to their questions, we’ll continue to discuss it. Intimacy is one of those topics that create a lot of discussion. Everyone has questions about it, concerns about it—whether they want to share them in public or not. One of the things I hear most often goes something like this: “I wish my husband would flirt with me more often. He only turns flirtatious when he wants to be intimate, and the rest of the … Continue reading

Could Your Husband Cope?

Could your husband cope if you were laid up for a while? The impression I get from many women, particularly those around my age group or older, is that their husbands wouldn’t know the first thing about how to cook a meal, do the laundry or do any of the other household chores that need to be done, especially when the wife is laid up. This puts pressure on the wife to keep going, even when she should not because she is too sick. Mick thankfully has done a great job over the last few weeks and given the ongoing … Continue reading

Admit Your Part

One thing important in any marriage is being able to admit when you are wrong or have done something foolish. Yesterday was one of those days when Mick and I were trying to sort out a few things about my website, in preparation for updating it and making some changes. Now, I’m by no means a technical expert, so without his input I would be completely lost. In the course of tying to edit and make changes whole pages disappeared. In a situation like that the tendency could be for either of us to start laying blame and accusations. But … Continue reading
