Celebs Under Fire for Attending Kadyrov Party

Once again, I am mixing my love for green and pop culture together. This time, it is for celebrities that celebrated a reported bad guy. Last week, Chechen leader Ramzan Kadyrov celebrated his 35th birthday in style. Showing up to help him celebrate (not unpaid I might add) was Academy Award winning actress Hilary Swank and action star Jean-Claude Van Damme. Rumors are that British violinist Vanessa-Mae received as much as $500,000 dollars to play at the party. Kevin Costner, Eva Mendes, and Shakira were also all invited, but didn’t show up. There is nothing wrong with throwing a big … Continue reading

Paul Newman and Joanne Woodward: A Lesson in Long Marriages Hollywood-Style

I didn’t think I was going to have anything to write about Paul Newman’s death here in the Marriage Blog. I figured that’d be something for the girls who cover the Popular Culture Blog to write about. But as I’ve come across all the different tributes to his life, something’s become glaringly clear: Paul Newman was more than an actor, a race car driver, a camp founder, an activist, and a food line entrepreneur. He was a loving, devoted husband, something he seemed to be just as proud of as he was of any of his other accomplishments. Maybe even … Continue reading

Bobby Brown Tells All

And, I can only imagine what a tale it is! Singer bad boy Bobby Brown, formerly Mr. Whitney Houston, has decided to write a tell-all book about he and Whitney’s rocky marriage. Titled “The Truth, the Whole Truth, and Nothing but the Truth,” Bobby makes such claims as the fact that he never used cocaine until after her met Whitney. He goes on to say marijuana was his drug of choice, but after marrying Whitney in 1992, he did every drug he could get his hands on, including heroin and cocaine. Bobby says in the book that the couple’s marriage … Continue reading

Stress and Women

A recent survey from the American Psychological Association found that more than eighty percent of women experience physical symptoms of stress like fatigue and headaches on a regular basis. Are you one of them? The thing is, most women think they’re managing their stress well. In the survey from the American Psychological Association, eighty-one percent of women said they were managing their stress “extremely well” or “somewhat well”. Despite that, eighty-one percent of women complained of physical symptoms of stress. How do you know if you’re stressed? Physical symptoms like headache, fatigue, and muscle tension. Impaired ability to focus or … Continue reading

Revisiting Celebrity Marriages – Lessons We Can Learn

The last time I visited on this topic was last April but with the rash of celebrity news over the last ten days, now is as good a time as any to take a look at the Hollywood power couples where it appears the marriages are failing or ending with the woman’s successful career continuing to skyrocket and the man’s appearing to be at best, underachieving compared to the wife’s. In the last few weeks we’ve seen Britney Spears leaving Kevin Federline, Reese Witherspoon and Ryan Philippe filing for divorce, Whitney Houston finally saying good-bye to Bobby Brown and before … Continue reading

‘Friends’ Star Seeks Out a Marriage Therapist

I’ve mentioned before that I’m not big on celebrity gossip, but there was a little tidbit that caught my attention when it came down the newswire from United Kingdom. It seems that Courtney Cox (known as Monica Gellar in the series Friends as well as the reporter in the Scream trilogy) has engaged the services of a marriage therapist to help out with her marriage to David Arquette. Apparently, an argument between the couple was caught by the paparazzi during a recent vacation. According to the Yahoo News Report, Cox told Life weekend magazine: “I could see how relationships break … Continue reading

Mindless Does Matter

“Contrary popular belief,” says Dr. John Gottman, the professor of psychology who founded the Gottman Institute. “It is the mundane events of everyday life that build love in marriage. Connecting in the countless mindless moments that usually go by unnoticed establishing a positive emotional climate.” Gottman’s research over the last 25 years has lead Gottman to the following conclusions: Only 20% of divorces are caused by an affair Marriages Die with a Whimper So if only 20% of divorces are caused by an affair (which flies in the face of all the muckety muck promoted by soap operas) then the … Continue reading

What is a Scientology Wedding Ceremony?

Scientology often tops the news because many celebrities follow the tenets of L. Ron Hubbard’s religion. Celebrities make the news and thus Scientology is thrust front and center. Despite the constant appearance in a rash of recent news articles, few do more than speculate, comment or criticize the faith of the Scientologists without actually providing some explanation for what is being commented on. Tom Cruise is among one of the more notable Scientologists in the news of late and a recent report stated that Katie Holmes, his fiancé, is studying Scientology. They will be married in a Scientology wedding ceremony. … Continue reading
