Celebrity Marriages - Lessons We Can Learn - Part I

Okay, I'll admit it - I read the gossip about celebrity marriages just like everyone else. I hate saying that I do that - I feel guilty for prying into the lives of people whether they are famous or not. I think everyone has a right to privacy and I understand that when a celebrity gets married or goes to walk their dog - there are people out there that think that is news.

Why?

The public wants to know and that's what makes it news.

Why do we want to know so much about the private lives of people we only know through their work on screen, behind cameras or elsewhere? Because deep down, each and every one of us wants to live somewhat vicariously through the trials and tribulations that plague our celebrities. By reading about their marriages, divorces, affairs and scandals, we not only can feel a little bit better about our lives, but about our choices as well.

Don't get me wrong. I don't think that just because someone is a celebrity that they deserve to have their lives dissected. But in this day and age, it's understood that if you put yourself out there, you are going to face having your life under a microscope.

So what can we learn from Celebrity Marriages?

Tom Cruise & Nicole Kidman

From Tom and Nicole, we can learn that even the most secure of marriages can have deep-seated issues that can not only end a marriage, but also end it acrimoniously. We can also learn that what goes on between a couple, public or private, is very much their business and no one else's. All the speculation in the world will not repair a marriage nor will public accusations make problems disappear. The best choices are the ones that allow the couple to get on with their lives if their marriage really can't work out.

Elizabeth Taylor & Her Husbands

Love is not something that can be manufactured and it is not something that can be played at. Love is a very vital component to the success of a marriage. Marriage needs a solid foundation and more often than not, the limelight will highlight the cracks in the foundation and direct everyone's attention to them. If you do not pay attention to the foundation, it will crumble long before you have a chance at success.

Brad Pitt & Jennifer Aniston

They can look like they have it all and there can still be something missing. If one partner is not happy, a marriage can begin to unravel. When the circle that closes around a couple and provides them with insulation is opened to admit others into their relationship, then it may be impossible to close the circle and repair it.

Ryan Phillippe & Reese Witherspoon

Passion is a grand thing to have, but marriage takes work. You have to be willing to make sacrifices. You have to choose your family first. You have to remember that while you work and your career are important, they should never supplant the role of your marriage or your family. When you work together, you can overcome challenges and make the most of the rewards.
