Celebrating National Marriage Week

Did you know that it’s National Marriage Week? It goes from February 7th through the 14th, Valentine’s Day. I love the fact that we have an entire week to recognize and celebrate something so very important. So what is the point to National Marriage Week? It is to build a stronger marriage culture since it has been found that healthy marriages can reduce the risk of poverty and benefit children in a number of ways. It is also a way to encourage married people to do what they can to strengthen their marriages and thereby, reducing the rate of divorce. … Continue reading

Celebrating 3, Part 2

Last year Jessie turned two. Turning two was a big deal in our house. Five days after Jessie turned two we adopted her. Her first foster parents came to her first birthday party, but were unable to come to her second. We didn’t invite them to her third. Because of the adoption, both sets of grandparents were there to celebrate turning two with Jessie. This year the grandparents broke their visits up so each could spend time with Miss Jess. My parents arrived four days apart; Dad wanted to give Mom more time alone with us. They were here on … Continue reading

Marriage In The News: Jilted Bride Makes Lemonade from Lemons

The title is a bit cliché, but when I read about Kyle Paxman’s story – I couldn’t help but feel for this woman and what she managed to do with her heartbreak. It seems that just six weeks before her wedding, a stranger appeared at her business office with multiple e-mail messages and supporting evidence that Ms. Paxman’s fiancé was having an affair with the stranger’s girlfriend. It’s hardly surprising that the wedding was called off, but Ms. Paxman’s dress had already arrived and all the arrangements, pre-payments and more were done. There were more than a 180 guests invited … Continue reading

Celebs Under Fire for Attending Kadyrov Party

Once again, I am mixing my love for green and pop culture together. This time, it is for celebrities that celebrated a reported bad guy. Last week, Chechen leader Ramzan Kadyrov celebrated his 35th birthday in style. Showing up to help him celebrate (not unpaid I might add) was Academy Award winning actress Hilary Swank and action star Jean-Claude Van Damme. Rumors are that British violinist Vanessa-Mae received as much as $500,000 dollars to play at the party. Kevin Costner, Eva Mendes, and Shakira were also all invited, but didn’t show up. There is nothing wrong with throwing a big … Continue reading

The Expectations of Valentine’s Day

I don’t know if my husband and I are the only ones but despite being married nearly 20 years we don’t really go all out and celebrate Valentine’s Day. It’s not that we don’t acknowledge the day because we do. After all, I did buy my husband a card and a box of chocolates that are in the shape of a heart but look like a baseball, one of his favorite sports. I received from my husband a poem he wrote all on his own and although it was beautiful, we don’t celebrate Valentine’s Day in the sense that we … Continue reading

Celebrity Engagements—-Drew and Anna Up In a Tree…

Not together…with their respective new future spouses. Not only does Drew Carey have a new gig taking over for Bob Barker on “The Price Is Right,” but now he’s also getting a new wife to boot. Nicole Jaracz is no consolation prize, according to the actor’s rep. Carey’s new fiancée is a recent graduate of culinary school and reportedly a perfect match for Carey, a self-professed foodie. The marriage will be the first for both Carey and Jaracz, however, according to The Power of 10’s rep, no date for a wedding has been set yet. Carey’s rep did reveal that … Continue reading

Pop Culture Potpourri: Lending A Hand, Taking A Hand, and Watching A Hand

LENDING A HAND And you thought he only garnered headlines when he was with Heather Locklear. It appears there’s more to actor David Spade than most of us realize. According to news reports, the “Rules of Engagement” star recently donated $25,000 to the family of a slain Phoenix police officer. The 43-year-old comedian and Arizona native told reporters after reading about the police officer’s death last month, he was “hit out of the blue” by the shooting and the fact that the officer had overcome cancer to return to duty. “It just struck me as such a rough situation just … Continue reading

The Single Fantasy

National Singles Week runs from September 15-21. This year the National Singles Association is hosting events in Atlanta from September 17 thru 23. Unmarried America is also celebrating singles during the same time period, with what they call National Unmarried and Single Americans Week. “Why the fascination with Singles Week, Courtney? I thought you were happily married? And didn’t you just celebrate an anniversary?” Yes, I am happily married and, yes, we did just celebrate an anniversary, our 12th in fact. But sometimes I have this fantasy of what it would be like to be footloose and fancy free… The … Continue reading

Fast Start: Hurrying Up While Waiting

You’ve probably heard international adoption called a “hurry-up and wait” game. Meaning, that you are often in a mad hurry to fulfill every request for a document or signature, lest you miss the monthly meeting of the Romanian adoption committee by one day, or your social worker doesn’t get a chance to fax her counterpart before her vacation, or whatever, and you miss another precious month of your child’s infancy. Then, you don’t hear back from anyone for weeks. Sometimes slow and steady is okay. You focus on your work, or your other kids, or whatever, sending out questionnaires to … Continue reading
