Mother’s Blog About Mentally Ill Son Goes Viral

A mother has written a blog that has been passed around the internet via Facebook and in links in several other blogs and news articles. In it, she discusses her fear that her son will someday do something similar to what Adam Lanza did in Connecticut. It is an eye-opening piece of writing. Yesterday, I wrote a blog that clarified that not all people who have Asperger’s Syndrome are violent. Some can, and do, express loud, verbal, outbursts or may push someone away from them. Typically, the violence that people with Asperger’s Syndrome express is not premeditated or planned out. … Continue reading

When Insurance Ad Campaigns Go Horribly Wrong

Usually, when an insurance company creates an advertisement campaign that goes viral, it makes the insurance company very happy. It’s a good way for the insurance company to get it’s name to a lot of potential customers, and to be seen in a positive light. Sometimes, however, this can completely backfire. It seems that one cannot always believe everything that you see on Facebook. How many really well known advertisement campaigns can you think of? When it comes to commercials about insurance, there are a few that probably come to mind. You migh think of the Progressive commercials with Flo, … Continue reading

The Marriage Blog Week in Review for February 25-March 2

It was another slow week here in the Marriage Blog. Not intentionally. Lyn was battling the flu unfortunately. She was busy trying to recover her strength. I don’t have a good excuse for my lack of article submissions. Except it was the end of the month and I was scrambling to wrap up all sorts of loose ends. But in case you missed any of the few articles we did post, here’s a handy Week in Review recap for your reading pleasure. Tuesday, February 26 Can You Answer These 15 Questions About Your Significant Other? A friend of mine who … Continue reading

Calling the Wrong Name

In a few of our past articles, Courtney and I have both been discussing affairs, wrong doings, and relationship mistrust. Some of these issues have been mental, some emotional, and others physical. No matter which type it is, we have agreed that it is a serious issue and should be discussed. I would like to somewhat continue our discussions of relationship mishaps. Today’s article is inspired from several different television show stories. However, the main one that comes to mind is Friends. Ross had several different relationship issues arise on the show. One of the main occurrences that I can … Continue reading

Celebrities’ Unexpected Callings

When we watched her cuddling an emaciated extraterrestrial on the big screen as a little girl I’m sure not very many of us would have imagined Drew Barrymore would grow up to be an advocate for the world’s hungry. But, alas, life is unpredictable. Yes, it is true. Actress Drew Barrymore has been named an ambassador against hunger for the World Food Program. The global humanitarian program provides food aid to more than 90 million poor people, including 58 million hungry children who live in 80 of the world’s poorest countries. Members of the media have been following the 32-year-old … Continue reading

False Assumptions

One of the things I have always prided myself on is being a parent who listens. In that my children know they can come to me no matter what the problem is, including if they have done something wrong. Although I have conveyed this message to them time and time again, it doesn’t mean they will always take me up on it. That is one of the things I learned through some struggles last year with one of my teens. So now I know to never assume all is well. Let me share just a small example of what I … Continue reading

Jeremy Lin and Racial Slurs

I don’t like the NBA, but lately, I can’t help but hear the name Jeremy Lin. Apparently, he’s the wunderkind of the New York Knicks. Several things make Lin special. Number one, this undrafted, claimed-off-waivers player is running circles around many players in the league. Second, he played basketball at Harvard and wasn’t even there on an athletic scholarship. That makes him the first Harvard player to play in the NBA since Ed Smith played 11 games with the Knicks in the 1953-54 season. And finally, Lin is one of the few Asian Americans in history to make the NBA … Continue reading

Bill Maher, Tim Tebow, and Jesus

I don’t watch football, but I have more or less been forced to know who Tim Tebow is because everyone is talking about him. Plus, you can’t really surf the Internet without seeing someone tebowing. Tebowing is the act of dropping to one knee and praying thusly named such after Tim Tebow. As the starting quarterback for the Denver Broncos, Tebow performs this gesture to thank God for his success during games. And tebowing has taken off like crazy, with videos and photos of people tebowing popping up all over the Internet. But, this week, Bill Maher came under fire … Continue reading

Teaching Mini Manners, Part 2

Manners to be enforced in preschool years: Do not make fun of someone’s appearance or call names: As mentioned, children are bound to say anything that crosses their minds. It is important to teach a child that insulting someone is unacceptable. A child may not understand she is insulting someone but only pointing out a fact such as someone has a large nose or is overweight. A child also may not understand that laughing at another person is hurtful. Children are egocentric and need constant direction in this area. Take swift action if your child insults another person or child. … Continue reading

Age Difference

My dad is one of 10 children. My grandmother conceived and birthed eight boys and two girls naturally. Ten individual pregnancies. No multiples. That’s a ton of kiddos, regardless of the fact that they were a devout Catholic family living on the East Coast in the 1940s and 50s. With so many mouths to feed it’s no surprise that on many days my grandfather could barely keep all of his kids’ names straight, let alone be able to remember each and every child’s age, which is why I rolled my eyes when I heard the latest attack on President Barack … Continue reading
