Saving Money on New Year’s Parties

Even if you are planning a potluck for your New Year’s Eve bash, hosting a get-together of family and friends is going to cost you. Fortunately, there are ways you can serve up a memorable shindig without breaking the bank. The key is to employ some basic tips on cooking for a crowd that won’t sacrifice flavor for frugality. For starters, you’ll want to invest in affordable appetizers. If you can get guests to fill up on snack food, they will be less likely to devour five helpings of the main course. Some affordable snacks include: chips and salsa, cheese … Continue reading

Ways to Spend Less in the New Year

If your New Year’s resolution is to cut back on spending, then now is the time to gather tips on how to look for the best deals. After all, spending less doesn’t mean avoiding stores all together. Rather, the goal is to get what you need for the least amount of money. So, how can you accomplish this? Here are some money-saving tips: 1. Look for items in the clearance section. However, don’t buy something just because its price is radically reduced. If you don’t need the item, it’s not a bargain. Instead, you are simply filling your home with … Continue reading

A 12 Hour Car Trip

I am about to take a 12 hour car trip with my two kiddos. Traveling with children is hard no matter how old they are, and unfortunately, in today’s economy, more and more people are hitting the roads as a way to save money. I am traveling to visit my sister just 2 states over, but I’m sure when I get in the car with two kids, ages 4 and 2, it will feel like worlds away. This will be the first time I have ever embarked on an adventure like this. And, to be honest, it sounds a little … Continue reading

The Curse of the Shopping Cart

I’ve always maintained that my daughter is one smart cookie (I’m her mother, what do you expect?), but I recently discovered that she is even wiser than I give her credit for. Since she was a newborn, my daughter has hated shopping carts. She would scream each time I placed her infant seat in one and wouldn’t stop screeching until I removed her from it. This trend continued during her toddler and preschool years. Now that she is six, I don’t even bother suggesting that she ride in a cart because my groceries would never fit if she actually took … Continue reading

Disney Tickets Together on Facebook

Everything goes through Facebook these days. Companies use it to network, advertising agencies promote their wares, and people play games and scroll through pictures of their friends. With everything attached to Facebook now, it’s hard to remember the early days of the site, back when it was only designed for students. Those days are long past, and now Facebook routinely performs one of its primary services as a marketing tool. Companies create pages for their products of which people can become fans; sometimes agencies also put together groups where fans come together and discuss their favorite show, clothing line, etc. … Continue reading

Second Marriages: Buying a New Home Together

It’s arrogant to presume that when a person marries for a second time that they do so for anything less than the reasons a person may marry for the first time. It’s very common in this day and age for men and women in their 40s and 50s to meet, fall in love and marry. They may or may not have been married before and chances are they have children from previous relationships. There is one challenge they face in their middle age that may never have confronted their younger counterparts – where to live? Where Should We Live? A … Continue reading

New Uses for Clothespins

Well, this new house is finally starting to come together. Tom is back to work, and Andrew started at his new school, which so far, he absolutely loves. He comes home with a happy face after school. The weather has turned a bit colder this week, but I am looking forward to getting a clothes line hung in the back in some inconspicuous place, so I can hang our laundry. I have my clothes pins all ready to go. In fact, in my excitement, I probably have more clothespins than I will actually use. So, of course I was inspired … Continue reading

DuPont Carpet Care for Cars – Free after Rebate

We bought our first mini-van straight from the factory (we’re wiser now, and more frugal!). It was actually a thing of beauty, with large doors that opened on both sides and built-in car seats. Since I had four children under seven, that was a huge selling point! We paid extra for the stainproof carpet, the protectant on the upholstery, and even bought a specialized warranty that would cover cleaning. I think it went about 90 days without a spill. I actually breathed a sigh of relief when Paul spilled a cup of hot coffee on his lap, which then proceeded … Continue reading

The Marriage Blog Week in Review February 17 – March 2, 2007

Wow, has it really been two weeks since the last time I sat down to write a week in review? Buying a New Car Together

My husband and I bought a new car yesterday! Well, it’s actually a crossover, a cross between and SUV and a mini-van, but it’s a beautiful vehicle. It’s loaded with awesome options like heated external mirrors and automatic lights, and all kinds of other stuff that I’m still trying to figure out. I’m so excited! Our old mini-van broke down last year, with transmission problems. We saved up the money for the repair, but then the mechanic informed us it was going to be more than twice his original quote. Apparently, there were some manufacturer’s updates to the transmission for … Continue reading
