Say Goodbye to the Five-Second Rule

Are you a proponent of the five-second rule? For busy parents, the five-second rule is typically standard operating procedure.  This is especially true for parents with multiple children.  Whereas firstborns usually gets a clean pacifier if their original hits the floor, by the time the third kid comes along, he’s lucky if mom wipes said pacifier before sticking it back in her child’s mouth. Sound familiar? Well, you may want to start thinking twice about following the famed five-second rule. According to researchers at San Diego State University, if an item falls on the ground, it is not safe for … Continue reading

George Clooney – Humanitarian

Really George Clooney? You are already extremely talented (having an Oscar to attest to that), incredibly good looking (having left behind him a string of beauties and he is currently dating statuesque WWE Diva Stacy Keibler), and now continues to be unbelievable giving. If he wasn’t so lovable and charming, we would surely all hate him. This time, Clooney has auctioned off his beloved 2008 Tesla “Signature 100” Roaster for charity. He said the car, with only 1,825 miles, was a joy to drive, but he loves something else even more – helping make the world a better place. Clooney’s … Continue reading

Behind the Screens: Are You Hiding In Plain Sight?

A woman I know with two small children is going through a difficult time in her life right now; she’s getting a divorce. Her husband left her abruptly, leaving her few options but to return to her hometown to live with her parents until she gets “settled.” Returning home feels to her like admitting defeat, like she’s unable to make it on her own. It’s hard for her to think about starting over in life, in relationships, in work; the whole thing is pretty overwhelming. I started noticing that whenever I’m on Facebook, so is she. I wondered, What are … Continue reading

When Bad is Good

I think about her a lot. Especially on the days I am forced to function on less than four hours of sleep. She’s the single mom of three children, who takes two buses and one train to a job that pays her six bucks an hour; a job in which she cleans other people’s homes while hers sits in utter disarray. When she’s done sanitizing someone else’s space, she gets back on the train and heads to another job; this one serving strangers hamburgers, fries and compliments hoping that her smile and attentiveness will score her a fat tip to … Continue reading

Waivers from No Child Left Behind Raises Concerns

The Department of Education is allowing all 50 states to apply for a waiver from the No Child Left Behind Act. This law was created during the Bush administration. How will the waivers affect students who have special needs? The No Child Left Behind Act (NCLB ) was created in 2001. The main purpose of this law was to make schools, and teachers, accountable for how well, (or how poorly), their students are learning. The criteria that is being used to determine which schools are doing well, and which are “failing”, comes from standardized testing. The scores that come from … Continue reading

Movie Review: Gentleman’s Agreement

I love finding correlations to life in all my experiences, be it in overhearing a conversation or watching a movie. Everything can be taken as a lesson, and if we’re willing to look beneath the layers, we learn so much. This was further brought home to me the other night as I sat watching the classic movie “Gentleman’s Agreement” with Gregory Peck and Dorothy McGuire. The premise of the movie in and of itself was thought-provoking: Peck, starring as Skyler Green, is a journalist tasked to write a series on anti-Semitism. He struggles for a time to get the angle … Continue reading

Another Judge Rules Mandatory Health Insurance Unconstitutional

Today, a federal judge in Florida has ruled that the mandatory requirement that all Americans must purchase health insurance is unconstitutional. It is expected that the federal government will file for a stay, and that these kinds of court cases will eventually be heard by the Supreme Court. The ruling by Judge Roger Vinson, in Pensacola, Florida, today matches the ruling by Judge Henry E. Hudson in a similar court case. Both of those rulings are the opposite of how Judge George Steeh ruled, on yet another case, in Michigan, when he decided that the law that would require all … Continue reading
