Snack Attack: Tiffins, Bentos and Other Cool Snack Containers for Your Preschooler

I don’t know about your preschooler, but mine has a randomly occurring attack of the food fussies. This is especially acute during the Christmas season, when sweets abound. While vegetables and fruit are not in short supply around our house, the sweets are calling in a big way. Soon they’ll be leaving our house in the form of cookie baskets, and all will be well. However, we do have ongoing food fussy issues in our house. Some are understandable: I remember despising onions and tomatoes as a child. Others are a little mysterious: my daughter’s extreme dislike of mixed foods … Continue reading

Three Things Not to Do in a Marriage

If you want to avoid divorce then you might want to avoid doing the following three things in your marriage. Spy Spying can break down the trust between a couple. And the person doing the spying should be prepared for the consequences, whether it is information that the spouse would rather not have or the conflict that arises when the spying spouse is found out. Here are some of the reasons that people spy on their spouses: They suspect infidelity They feel a right to know everything about the other person They wonder at too much time spent at the … Continue reading

How Husbands and Wives Can Help Each Other in this Economy

The economy is affecting everything including marriages. We’ve touched on this before in the marriage blog, how financial crises can lead to conflict and divorce, how it can affect the kind of wedding that you have and even how it can delay a divorce. Today I wanted to share with you some ways that husbands and wives can really help each other in this economy and make not only their marriages stronger but support each other. When the economy, global or personal is in crisis, it is more important than ever to work together. Although your husband may or may … Continue reading

Attack the Issue, Not Each Other

One of the things that I am working on within myself is to avoid attacking my spouse when there is an issue at hand. Instead, I try to focus on attacking the issue with him, instead. This helps keep the personal attacks and nagging each other away. Attacking the issue instead of each other can come up in many forms. For example, rather than attack my spouse for not getting a certain home repair done, I simply ask “What can I do to get this completed?” When he forgets to shoo our old cat down to the basement and close … Continue reading

Do You Ever Feel Your Dog’s Not Living Up to His Full Potential?

I get both really inspired and really down on myself after I interview people like Beth Terrell or Joani Ascher. Inspired because they’re doing neat things with their dogs, like teaching them how to dance or grooming puppies to be Seeing Eye dogs. Down because Murph’s one of the smartest dogs I’ve ever had. I often wonder if I’m holding him back from living up to his full potential. At the beginning of this year I resolved to change that. I was determined to look into enrolling Murph and myself in a pet therapy program. Then my mom got sick … Continue reading

The Pets Blog Week in Review for Jul 23-29

There was one issue in particular that dominated this week in the Pets Blog –dogfighting! Both Aimee and myself had plenty to say on that issue. But we covered other things as well. To find out what, consult your week-at-a-glance breakdown below. Monday, July 23 Aimee wrote about a group in Pennsylvania called Dogs Deserve Better. They’re trying to raise awareness about the cruelty and dangers of chaining via an event called Unchain the Fifty, where they try to get one person in each state to spend a minimum of eight hours chained to a doghouse. Tuesday, July 24 There … Continue reading

Ask a Marriage Blogger: Isn’t Advocating for Gay Marriage Out of Line?

Your recent blog regarding gay marriage made it very clear that you advocate for gay marriage and that anyone who disagrees with that is prejudiced or a bigot. You write about how to take care and protect and strengthen your marriage and then you endorse a lifestyle that attacks marriage and wants to destroy it. Why? Isn’t this a site that promotes traditional family values? How is gay marriage promoting traditional values? Should you be ashamed of giving so much coverage to this issue? These are just two of the notes that I have received in the last week since … Continue reading

Be Not Afraid — Stacey DeMille Wardwell

“Be Not Afraid” is a self-help book for young women to teach them how to defend themselves against attack, using not only common sense and basic self-defense strategies, but relying on the inspiration of the Holy Ghost to guide them in choosing their friends and where they should spend their time. The book is dedicated “To every innocent young woman who has suffered as a victim and every young woman who will not have to.” That is the message of the book – how to avoid, overcome, and most of all, understand that when these things happen, it’s not your … Continue reading

The Biggest Disney Headlines

Last week there were two big pieces of Disney news announced: the director for the first “Star Wars” sequel, and more information on concerns over privacy relating to the MyMagic+ wristbands.  Let’s look at them both. In a move that is both surprising and not, Lucasfilm has chosen J.J. Abrams to direct the next “Star Wars” film.  The director/producer is best known for television shows like “Lost” and “Alias,” and for famously rebooting the “Star Trek” film franchise.  J.J. Abrams was rumored as a director for “Star Wars” early on, but he denied it; or really, he claimed he had … Continue reading

The Horror of Cyber Bullying

I read a story today of a 15 year old girl who committed suicide this week because of the relentless bullying she was getting both at school and online. A month before her death she posted a youtube video sharing her story in hopes that it would help someone else going through the same thing. I’m not sure why her story stuck with me so much, but I haven’t been able to stop thinking about it all night. This girl was absolutely beautiful and incredibly talented, yet even in death, there were many cruel comments posted on the video. I … Continue reading
