Do You Dare to Compare?

Have you seen this tooth-achingly sweet note a 10-year-old boy penned to his hard working mom and attached to an even sweeter homemade gift? The photo has gone crazy viral since the boy’s sibling innocently posted it on Reddit. The youngster’s touching note reads: “Dear Mom, This is for you, I understand how hard you work, and I know you love strawberry milk, so I made this for you. :)” Sniff. Sniff. Right? I mean, c’mon moms, admit it; that tear in your eye, the tingle in your gut, your melted heart-—pure jealously. Okay, maybe, not 100% pure, but pretty … Continue reading

You’re Not Special

What words would you want spoken to your high school graduate? Would you prefer they receive accolades and praises for all they have accomplished? Or would you like to hear these words, “You aren’t special.” A commencement speech out of Massachusetts has caught the attention of the nation. High school English teacher David McCullough, Jr. had this to say: “None of you is special. You’re not special. You’re not exceptional.” He goes on to say that despite their trophies, report cards, despite the encouragement they have received from others (including the big purple dinosaur “Barney) and no matter how many … Continue reading

Saying No Can Bring More Joy Into Your Life

I struggle with saying no to people, including myself. Once I became a single mother I was determined to do the best job I could so that my child would not suffer from being raised in a single parent household. Part of that determination was feeling like I had to be everything to everyone. I never said no when someone asked for help. I never said no when Hailey wanted me to stop what I was doing and entertain her. I never said no when I would tell myself to just keep going, people live perfectly well on five hours … Continue reading

Embellishing Mother’s Day Layouts

One of the sweetest Mother’s Day gifts I ever received was a scrapbook layout featuring various pictures of my daughter and a slew of her homemade art projects. My sister-in-law did an amazing job creating a photo collage using my daughter’s artsy masterpieces to embellish the page, along with several cute quotes detailing why she loves her mommy so much. Sniff, sniff. I love that layout. Fortunately, the page design is easy to duplicate for a mother of one or many. The collage requires at least five stand-out photos which can be placed in a random shape. You could also … Continue reading

Talking to Your Parents About Their Finances

There are many things that people tend to become concerned about as their parents get older. Things like the physical and mental health and well being of their elderly parents are often top of mind for many adult children. The finances of elderly parents are also often a cause for great concern, especially if the adult children do not live close to them. How can you help to ensure that your parents stay current with their bills and stay away from scam artists who target the elderly without offending them? It is a delicate path to walk, to be sure, … Continue reading

Unique Valentine’s Day Layouts

Looking to put some spice into your Valentine’s Day layouts? After a few years of scrapbooking the same old Love Day designs with candy, heart and cupid themes, I wanted to try something new. Since I rarely use quotes in my layouts I figured I would take inspirational words to a new level by adding them to my Valentine’s Day titles and journaling blocks. Some of my favorite love-themed quotes include: “For thy sweet love remember’d such wealth brings,/ That then I scorn to change my state with kings.” – William Shakespeare You can’t have a Valentine’s Day spread without … Continue reading

Would You Allow Your Kid to Take the Plunge?

My friend’s 14-year-old son isn’t feeling well today. In fact, he’s been under weather ever since January 2nd—roughly 24 hours after he submerged his entire body in icy Lake Michigan, all in the name of F-U-N. Despite frigid temperatures and sub-zero wind chills, my pal’s kid took the Polar Bear Plunge with a few dozen other crazies at Milwaukee’s Bradford Beach on New Year’s Day. The annual “party” has taken place at the popular Wisconsin landmark every year since 1992. However, this is the first year my friend has finally acquiesced to her teen’s relentless begging and pleading to allow … Continue reading

Taking Your Baby Sledding

This year was the first year we took my son sledding. I cannot tell you how fun it was! I loved my son’s reaction and I forgot how fun it was to go sledding myself, as well. I can’t remember the last time I went sledding by myself, but I know it is even more fun when you get to take your own kids. If your toddler is climbing up onto furniture, she’s probably old enough to handle sledding. If not, she might be a little too scared. It really depends on your child’s personality. My son is a little … Continue reading
