Sally Ride Dies

Okay, you are probably reading my headline going “Why is this under Green Living?” But let me explain… Astronaut Sally Ride died last Monday after a seventeen-month battle with pancreatic cancer. She was 61. However, she leaves behind a huge legacy. Ride became the first American woman in space in 1983 when she was a member of the Space Shuttle Challenger. She was also the first woman to use a robotic arm, which was then used to retrieve a satellite. Ride went up in the Challenger again in 1984 and all in all, she spent 343 hours in space. As … Continue reading

The Grass Is Green Enough on This Side, Thank You

There was a time in my marriage when I thought the grass was greener on the other side. Those were probably some of the most difficult moments in my marriage. I was disillusioned and he was disappointing to me. I had expectations and when they weren’t met, I thought someone else could better meet them. This happened at different points in my marriage. Each time I allowed myself to think the grass was greener on the other side—whether there was a literal person I was thinking of or just the “idea” of a person—it caused greater distance between my husband … Continue reading

How Do You Show Your Commitment?

I admit, song lyrics make me stop and think, especially unusual ones. The other day, “Grenade” by Bruno Mars was on the radio. For those not familiar with the song, he talks about all the things he’s willing to do for her, including taking a bullet through his brain, but she won’t do the same. It makes him question the depth of her commitment to him—well, he actually tells her off, in the song, but we’ll phrase it more nicely here. As I thought about this, I wondered. When we list off all the things we’d do for someone, and … Continue reading

Do You Know Your Spouse’s Greatest Needs?

I recently got together with a friend who was sharing a secret to her happy marriage. She divulged to me the frequency of her intimate relations with her husband and how in return he met so many of her needs. Those needs weren’t physical, nor were they emotional. They were doing chores around the house. Well I can definitely attest to the fact that I would love to see the dishes emptied, the laundry thrown in or the bathroom cleaned. But does my husband know this? Or do I just assume that he knows? You see, my friend and her … Continue reading

Are You a Ride or Die Woman?

Are you a ride or die woman? I watched an infuriating episode of Dr. Phil last week that was on this topic. A ride or die woman is basically one who stays by her man no matter what. While that sounds great and I am definitely all for keeping a marriage together, there are limits. The woman on this show was refusing to leave her husband who had cheated on her numerous times. There was also no indication that he would stop. Yet she wasn’t willing to leave him because she loves him and she didn’t want her son to … Continue reading

Would You Let Your Husband Win?

Would you let your husband win if you were playing against him in sport? Back in past times there was a theory that a girl or woman should always let her guy win. Even if she could play tennis or squash or whatever sport it was better than him, she was supposed to unobtrusively throw the game so he could feel good about himself. Apparently the idea was that the fragile male ego could not cope with being beaten by a female. I have to say I’ve never subscribed to that idea. Given the choice, I’d rather play with my … Continue reading

Open Adoption Crusader Dies

When my husband and I were taking the PRIDE (Parent Resources for Information, Development and Education) classes in order to become licensed foster/adopt parents we were assigned with creating a family tree for a future child. It was fun and I got to know more about my husband’s family. My dad has all of us signed up at Geni.com where we’re building a very nice family tree. Millions of people may not feel that deep sense of connection with their families because their families did not give birth to them. When I first learned what adoption was all about I … Continue reading

Olympians Sizzling Bodies May Be Too Hot for China

If you needed incentive to get your body in shape then the Summer Olympics came just in time. Good gracious, have you seen the killer bods these elite athletes are sporting? Seriously, U.S. swimmer Dara Torres could have ignited the Olympic flame during the opening ceremony via spontaneous combustion had she simply marched into the stadium wearing her bikini. Her body is so ripped I try to block out the fact that she gave birth just two years ago. Michael Phelps is cut like a rack of lamb, as is the entire U.S. men’s gymnastics team (or all the gymnasts … Continue reading

Tom Hanks Aids Italian Bride and Other Celebrities Heading Down the Aisle

Talk about a dream wedding… What blushing bride wouldn’t want Tom Hanks escorting her to the church on her wedding day? Sure, it would be even nicer if the hilarious actor were the one you were getting hitched to, but something is better than nothing. An Italian bride had the privilege of not only getting a Hanks escort, but the mega-movie star actually stopped production on his new film just so she could make it to the church in time to tie the knot. According to British newspapers, Hanks played a real life hero this week by halting filming on … Continue reading

The Long Ride Home – Andrea Boeshaar

Lara grew up pudgy and freckled. All the kids teased her—all the kids but Kevin, that is. He always stood up for her and kept the other kids from making her life too miserable. After Kevin’s parents were tragically killed, he and his brother moved away, supposedly to live with a relative, but Kevin ran off to become a rodeo star, and Lara hadn’t heard anything about him in ten years. Now an adult and working as a social worker at the hospital, Lara has moved past the pudgy stage and is now a lovely young woman. She’s jolted when … Continue reading
