Just when you think you are getting the hang of this single parent thing, you may find yourself right in the middle of another challenge- taking care of your aging parents. Welcome to the Sandwich Generation as a single parent. Many of us put off having children until we were older, whether by chance or by choice, we are older parents. The Sandwich Generation

Members of the sandwich generation are being chewed on at both ends. They have growing kids at home to care for and aging parents as well. Women are more likely to be members of this group than men and if you’re not careful you might run yourself ragged. If you are a member of the sandwich generation here are a few tips for you. 1. Take care of yourself! This should be your number one priority. You won’t be able to take care of anyone if you don’t first take care of yourself. Oftentimes as women, mothers, wives and caregivers … Continue reading

Parent Abuse

Thanks to Academy Award-winning actor Mickey Rooney, the media spotlight is once again illuminating the problem of elder abuse. However, this time it’s not just a 20/20 or Dateline NBC expose on seniors getting roughed up at assisted living facilities by a bunch of paid strangers. Rather, Rooney is pointing fingers at his own family, saying he was physically, mentally, and “financially” tortured by his stepson. For the record, the 90-year-old actor didn’t come out and name his stepson as his attacker. However, he has obtained a restraining order keeping his stepson, Chris Aber, away from him until an April … Continue reading

Taking care of aging parents during the holiday season can add to your daily stress. School Lunch: Freedom of Leaving Items Off

Hopefully you have taken the advice of Aimee Amodio and sat down with your child to review the school lunch menu. If you have, you probably did not notice a major change in the lunches served. Pizza, hot dogs, and French fries are still on the menu. However, school lunches are healthier. Wheat bread products and low fat mixes are being used. More foods are being baked instead of fried. Vending machine junk food items have been removed from the schools. Drink machines are full of water and juices. This is a big change from the past. At one time, … Continue reading

The Biggest Challenges to Marriage

You may think I’ll bring up the marriage debates, but in my opinion it’s not related to the greatest challenges facing a successful marriage and successful interactions between the couples that are married. The challenges I want to talk about here are the challenges that can leave your relationship precarious and potentially lead to the dissolution of your marriage if you and your spouse aren’t equipped to handle the challenges. I like to call these challenges the final five, because when you and your spouse are capable of overcoming these challenges, then you are usually in a stronger place in … Continue reading

How Chair Yoga Can Benefit Seniors

I took one of the Chair Yoga classes at my gym recently in case they ever needed a sub and also to see what it was all about. The class was all seniors or almost seniors. Sitting in chairs arranged in a huge circle, I noticed that some people left socks, or even shoes on. The environment was welcoming and relaxed. Camaraderie was shared by everyone in the class. This friendly community environment was the first benefit to seniors practicing yoga that I noticed. Everyone in the room looked forward to the class for social as well as physical reasons. … Continue reading
