Amazing Love Songs: "Elephant Love Medley"

Lately I have been listening to the Moulin Rouge soundtrack over and over and over. (Wayne says I should add a few hundred more "over's" in there to be truly accurate.)

To be super specific, it would be more correct to say I listen to it over and over and over when I'm in the car. (At home I've been listening to something else. My infatuation with Pandora's been replaced by the Dangerous Beauty soundtrack.)

I can't help myself. No, it's not the newest movie soundtrack release. (Neither of them are.) Moulin Rouge's soundtrack has been out a few years now. (And Dangerous Beauty even longer.) But for some reason Moulin Rouge's movie melodies stir my romantic soul these days.

I have three songs I particularly like, but perhaps the one that impresses me most (and the one I'll wear out on the CD first) is Track 10, "Elephant Love Medley."

Why?

There are several reasons.

1. It's full of great, playful chemistry.

2. It's unlike anything I've ever heard...yet it's completely familiar. (Even into the umpteenth listening of it now, it still catches me off guard.)

3. I'm completely awed by how many times the "L" word can be crammed into one song and not sound redundant. (I repeat myself, even into the umpteenth listening of it now, I'm impressed by how many times they sing "love" without overdoing it.)

If you haven't seen the movie, or if it's been a while, this song is the turning point in Satine's (played by Nicole Kidman) and Christian's (played by Ewan McGregor) relationship.

He's fallen for her, but she's a love cynic. (She does after all sell herself to men for money to make a living.) But he's determined to convince her they should be together.

"Elephant Love Medley" gets it's name from the fact his persuasion process takes place high up in her elephant abode over the Moulin Rouge. And the "medley" refers to the 10 different well-known love songs pieced together to create an entirely new song and a harmonious collage of word play between Christian and Satine. (Some of the well-known love songs within "Elephant Love Medley" include "All You Need Is Love," "Pride (In the Name of Love)," and "Silly Love Songs.")

Basically, I think why I like it so much is because it's one of the most brilliant, clever, and fun love songs I've ever had the pleasure of listening to over and over and over again.
