Love is In the Air

‘Love is the air,’ with TVs, stores, magazines etc all gearing up for Valentine’s Day. Everywhere you turn hearts and flowers dominate the displays. But love is more than just a romantic notion written about by songwriters, poets, novelists and movie script writers. Love can mean different things to different people, but I read a couple of good descriptions of love in a novel I’ve been reading. One was, ‘Allowances must be made for the people we love.’ That’s what Mary Ann was talking about too in her blog about unconditional love. It doesn’t depend on what they do but … Continue reading

What to Choose: A Cliched Wedding Song or an Offbeat One?

Tuesday proved to be a bonanza idea-receiving day for me. Not only did Jade send me the link to the Dear Abby letter from the distraught widower, but a rep from SPIN.com contacted me, too. He wanted to let me know about an article on their site called “Marriage Anyone? Top 5 Coolest Wedding Songs” by Abigail Everdell. He thought it might make for either interesting conversation or spark readers to reminisce about the song they played at their wedding. I think it might do a little of both. Cliched Songs How many of you played Peter Gabriel’s “In Your … Continue reading

52 Romantic Movies You Either Love or Hate

Dale’s blogs about some of her favorite romantic movies (see “Favorite Romance Movies” and “Favorite Romance Movies-Part 2”) has inspired this next one from me. The idea took hold because I sympathized with a comment one reader, deedee1231, left on both blogs regarding the movie Casablanca. She wasn’t a fan. (Though she didn’t begrudge Dale for including it on her fave list.) Deedee1231 thought Casablanca was overhyped. (Though she also admitted she’d seen it so many times she was just plum over it.) I chuckled with sympathy when I read her comment. Though it wasn’t Casablanca I had in mind, … Continue reading

“Your” Song: Significant in So Many Ways

Wayne and I’s song is “I Melt With You” by Modern English. We actually heard them in person in 1986. They were performing in concert at the University of Denver. Vague Memories I wish I remembered if I actually heard them play the song. I don’t. I vaguely remember us attending the concert. Part of it. That was the night Wayne and I ditched the group we always ran around with to go spend time together, alone, for the very first time. (Before that we were always with our friends doing stuff. That night changed everything. After that we were … Continue reading

The Marriage Blog Week in Review for February 11-17

Due to the observance of a major love holiday last week, the main focus of many articles in Marriage revolved around that. Here’s how Lyn and I covered all things Valentine’s Day and beyond. Monday, February 11 I wondered what mattered more to you with rings, quality or quantity. Lyn observed the kind of realms talk show and relationships spark around Valentine’s Day. Tuesday, February 12 I listed places for the romantically challenged to find online help. Lyn reflected on how some people just need somebody because they can’t stand being single. Wednesday, February 13 I weighed in with Rule … Continue reading

Amazing Love Songs: “Elephant Love Medley”

Lately I have been listening to the Moulin Rouge soundtrack over and over and over. (Wayne says I should add a few hundred more “over’s” in there to be truly accurate.) To be super specific, it would be more correct to say I listen to it over and over and over when I’m in the car. (At home I’ve been listening to something else. My infatuation with Pandora’s been replaced by the Dangerous Beauty soundtrack.) I can’t help myself. No, it’s not the newest movie soundtrack release. (Neither of them are.) Moulin Rouge’s soundtrack has been out a few years … Continue reading
