Grooms and Wedding Plans

Weddings are typically thought to be a ‘woman’s thing’. Many little girls begin to think about their wedding long before they begin to think about their spouse. They imagine themselves all dressed up and walking down the aisle. Some women have their entire wedding planned before their partner even proposes. Women begin to look through magazines and pick out dresses and flowers, and such. So how do men feel about all of this? In general, men are not thought to be wedding planners. Most men had rather not interfere with their fiancé’s planning. They realize how emotional and stressful she … Continue reading

Internet Romance: In All the Old Unfamiliar Places

One of the freedoms that have come into play in Iraq is difficult for the conservative nation and there are more than a few who consider it dangerous. The Internet has arrived in post-invasion Iraq and parents are more than a little concerned about the fact that their sons and daughters are going to be able to meet each other through the Internet and they can’t observe them or safely chaperone their topics of discussion. Some parents have discovered their children chatting in unsupervised conversations and removed the computer from their homes. It’s important to recognize that Iraq is a … Continue reading

All The Groom’s Men

When it comes to wedding planning, there is a lot of fuss made over the various attendants to the wedding. Among those attendants, however, are not just the bridesmaids and maids of honor – but the groomsmen, the best man and the ushers. Groomsmen can double as ushers, but sometimes you can have both. So let’s talk about these roles and what part they play in the wedding. The Groom & The Best Man The groom is the obvious choice. He’s part of the main event. He asked the bride to marry him. Tossing the Bouquet and Garter

One wedding tradition I didn’t follow at my own reception was the tossing of the bouquet and garter. I didn’t like the idea that it symbolized women scrabbling to be the next to get married, or having Jon remove an article of my clothing in front of everyone. If we look at the origins of this particular wedding tradition, we can see how it evolved. Traditionally, brides carried a bouquet that contained strong-smelling herbs and spices. This was, in part, another way of warding off evil spirits, but it could also serve to sweeten the proceedings if any of the … Continue reading

Why Pets Do Weird Things: Licking

Why do our pets lick us? We think we know some of the reasons: affection, we have something tasty on our skin. But there are additional reasons why they might lick us. Let’s look at them. One of the first things a mother dog does for her puppies is to lick them: it helps stimulate their senses. Doing so means comfort for dogs, so when they lick you they might be trying to pass those feelings onto you. It’s basically social bonding. Licking can also symbolize submission. In the wild subordinate dogs lick their alphas, so if a dog is … Continue reading

Evil Spirits and Sword Fights: More Wedding Tradition Origins

Today I want to share some of my favorite origins behind wedding traditions. The traditions themselves aren’t my favorites, but I’m very tickled by their roots. These traditions have to do with the wedding party and originated in medieval Europe. It’s easy enough to imagine why a bride is surrounded by bridesmaids; they often spent the night with the bride before her wedding to make sure that she wasn’t visited by any men before becoming a wife. But that’s not the only reason for their presence. Centuries ago brides and their maids all dressed alike (which is why bridesmaids still … Continue reading
