A Wedding Treasure Chest

With the number of second and third marriages today, many couples start off married life with more than enough household things. This means they are hard to buy for when it comes to wedding gifts. Given the number of couples who are living together before they are married and who have been out flatting for years on their own, these couples may also have an abundance of homewares. Some couples instead of getting duplicates of things they already have, have elected instead to have a wishing well where people can donate money instead. While it may sound calculated and mercenary … Continue reading

Genealogy Resources on Pinterest

Pinterest is filled with all manner of interesting things! Some of them are related to genealogy. In fact, there are some genealogy websites that have their very own Pinterest page. Here is a quick list of where to look if you want to find some genealogy resources on Pinterest. When I first started using Pinterest, it appeared to be filled with photos of wedding dresses and intricately braided hairdos. You will find a lot of wedding ideas on Pinterest, but that is not the only thing it is for. The main idea of the website is to use it to … Continue reading

Making it Meaningful

We had a friend some years back who applied to be a marriage celebrant. His aim was to be able to marry people who wanted a service but didn’t necessarily want it in a church but who still wanted something meaningful. If you and you intended are both members of the same church, then it makes sense to want to be married in that church. If you attend two different churches, then you are going to have to reach a compromise unless you decide to marry somewhere else entirely like a garden or a beach. It doesn’t have to make … Continue reading

When and Where to Marry

In Australia civil marriages are overtaking marriages held in a church. There were 25718 marriages in the last year conducted by marriage celebrants and 14966 religious ceremonies. I did wonder whether this allowed for ceremonies that were conducted by an ordained minister or pastor but were not held in a church but held on a beach or in garden or some other place. Some ministers or pastors will not marry couples outside a church. Others do not have a problem with it. In my opinion how is God’s creation any less a suitable place to be married than a building … Continue reading

Living Together Before Marriage

Living together before marriage is very common in today’s society. It almost seems to be the expected thing these days. I’ve heard people say its better to try it first and see whether you’re suited. But living together is not as good a test as some people might like to think. In fact statistics show those who live together before marriage are more likely to divorce than those who don’t. I’ve had friends who have lived together before marriage and translated that to a successful marriage. I also know those who have lived together and then, as soon as marriage … Continue reading

Mortgage Over Relationship

In an article I saw the average size of mortgages in Australia had hot an all time high. The average loan was for $367,000. My mind can’t even comprehend a loan that size or how you’d repay it. That’s more than our whole house cost! In December last year it was reported Australia had overtaken USA as the country building the largest houses. The trend is towards a family room, home theatres, parent’s retreats etc. The average size of the Aussie home according to experts is now 215 square meters which translates to around 23 square feet. But that’s the … Continue reading

Moving House

Moving house, I heard recently on the radio, can be as stressful as divorce or the death of a spouse. It can be a time of emotional upheavals, depending on how long you have been in the one place and how attached to it you are. But it doesn’t have to be a stressful experience. It can be a good opportunity to take stock in your life and in your marriage. We have moved a lot of in our marriage, the last being just over two years ago. It didn’t quite go according to our plan and there were times … Continue reading

The Gift of February 29

Today we have all been given a gift: Leap Day! It’s a precious treasure that only comes around every four years. Why do I consider it a precious treasure? Because I don’t know about you, but it’s not every year I’m given an extra day to spend with my loved ones. Think about that. Today you can sneak in one more hug, one more kiss, one more “I love you.” That’s something I touched upon in It’s Never Enough: Cherishing Each Married Moment. About how when a spouse passes, whether you’re aware it’s looming or not, you’ll never be prepared … Continue reading

Juicy Hollywood Tidbits – May 20, 2007

An Angel Dates Angel Cameron Diaz starred as Angel Natalie Cook in two Charlie’s Angels films, but now, she is dating a real life Angel – Criss Angel. She and illusionist Criss Angel (who stars in his own A&E show “Criss Angel Mindfreak”) have been seen the past couple of weeks looking cozy in Las Vegas. The couple hit Vegas restaurant Social House (at Treasure Island) then headed to hotspot PURE Nightclub at Caesar’s Palace. Sources say they whispered in each other’s ears and cuddled all night in the VIP section. Last week, Diaz and Angel attended the VH1 Rock … Continue reading

Big Sur—Nature At Its Finest

I took more than 475 pictures during our recent trip to Hawaii. Now, I am left with the task of sorting through stacks and stacks of photos and deciding which ones to scrapbook and which to place in our traditional family photo albums. Yesterday, as I went to place the photos in my “hold” container I came across shots of our last trip to California, specifically to Big Sur. Writer Henry Miller called it “nature smiling at herself in the mirror of eternity,” and for the millions who have been touched by Big Sur’s beauty, a finer description could not … Continue reading
