A Special Gift of Loveby Dale Harcombe | More from this Blogger 26 Mar 2009 08:37 AM
In our house we have a collection of 78s (For those younger one among you - these are the highly breakable records that came out many, many years ago) I've had this collection of 78s handed down from my mother. They've been packed and carefully moved from house to house each time we moved, and then carefully stored again, because I couldn't bear to part with them. But the problem was they never got played. Many of them are songs that were particularly meaningful to my mother and to my father. Even though I was into the rock music of the time, I adored this old music too, especially the ballads of the time. But playing records these days seems like such a waste of time, even if you can find a record player equipped to take this old time records. But now, my darling husband has solved the problem. Mick saw a record player that would take the 78s advertised at a shop and bought it. It took him a while to get to it, as he was busywith other things, but then together we spent time sorting through and choosing those songs in particular I liked and those he liked. Then he painstakingly set about playing, recording them and creating a couple of CDs for me of all those songs. What a labor of love from my darling husband as it took him a number of days and many hours of work to get through the records. One CD alone has over 130 songs on it! There is no way I could have done it. I wouldn't know where to start to produce a CD. But Mick figured it all out and set to work. I've been in my element, as I go off to choir or wherever I'm driving, singing along at the top of my voce( with the windows closed of course) in the car. What a great joy it has been to listen and sing along to those old songs again. I'd love to hear from you of something special your spouse has done out of love for you or maybe something you have done out of love for your spouse that has required a concentrated effort of time and skills. I'm not telling this story to brag, but my husband always comments about a gift I found by accident. He served a mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in California, Vietnamese speaking. At the time, they only had the Book of Mormon translated into Vietnamese; they didn't have a Triple Combination (Book of Mormon, Doctrine and Covenants, and Pearl of Great Price all in one) out yet. He mentioned many times that when it comes out, he wanted a Triple. We were living in Iowa at the time, and the church distribution center never had the Vietnamese version online. We were visiting Utah and I decided to go by the main distribution center to see if they might have it. I asked a clerk if they did, and she checked their catalog. She said the catalog listed that they only had the Book of Mormon. I went ahead and ordered it, thinking it would be nice for him to have a new one anyways. When the book arrived, I obviously had NO idea what it said and I trusted it was a Book of Mormon. When I gave him the book for his birthday, I thought he was going to faint. It was actually the Triple Combination he wanted! Every time he pulls it out, he gets a little teary. Dale Harcombe (10327) 27 Mar 2009 01:44 PMYep, he's a treasure. Any wonder I want to keep him! Thanks for sharing your lovely story too. Community Tags gifts of love, husbands, music, moving house, something special Discuss this article
