The Cotton Ball Diet is Dangerous

There have been many diets that sound a bit extreme – but that do involve actual food. The cotton ball diet, however, encourages people to eat a non-food item that their bodies cannot break down or gain nutrition from. The purpose of this diet, like all diets, is weight loss. It is important to know that the cotton ball diet is very dangerous! There are certain times of the year in which a lot of people suddenly decide to go on a diet. One is shortly before summer, when people decide they want to lose weight in order to look … Continue reading

A Not So Obvious Danger

We hear a lot about working mothers and the lack of time they spend with their children, teaching them but what about stay at home Moms? It can be just as much a danger. This week I read an interesting letter in Southern Cross magazine and it raised just this issue. The author suggested that stay at home Moms need wisdom every bit as much as the working away from home Mom does. She suggested that stay at home Moms can be in danger of being so involved in other activities things like running playgroup, bible study, or involved in … Continue reading

The Dangers Of Seeking Health Info Online

I’m sure that most people will agree that having the Internet is a wonderful thing for the most part. We can find interesting articles, interact with people, send away for free samples, file our taxes, even find true love online. There are also some bad things about seeking out information over the Internet as well. Some of the negative things are the fact that people can pretend to be anything and anyone they want. This doesn’t bode well for those trying to date since you may think you’re talking to someone who looks like Johnny Depp and the person ends … Continue reading

The Danger of Frugality

As much as I think of frugality as a positive way to live one’s life, I do have to admit that there are some ways that being frugal can be dangerous. Sometimes people who consider themselves frugal have dangerous practices from the beginning, and sometimes they just fall into dangerous areas. Here are some of the dangers of frugality and how you can avoid them. Health Issues Sometimes when you are doing something to be frugal, you really have to ask yourself if it is worth it in order to save money. Some practices are pretty obvious about leading to … Continue reading

Learn About Solar Cooking

Solar Cooking is a great way to do something positive for the environment. By using the natural power of the sun and not the generated, manufactured or stripped power of electricity, oil, coal or gas, you can create wonderful meals at home and lessen your impact on the Earth. Plus cooking with fire, even using wood, can be dangerous and also add carbon to the atmosphere. One other added benefit of solar cooking is that the slow cooking process tends to keep more nutrients in your food, which is always a great thing when you are feeding yourself or your … Continue reading

Book Review The Last Olympian (Percy Jackson and the Olympians series, Book 5)

The Last Olympian is the long-awaited fifth and final volume in the Percy Jackson and the Olympians series by Rick Riordan. The series focuses on “half-blood” children of one mortal parent and one Greek god, who are targeted by monsters from Greek mythology which they must fight in order to save themselves and, occasionally, Western civilization. (Kids whose makeup includes dyslexia and/or attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder will be pleased to learn that, in Riordan’s world, these are hallmarks by which one may recognize a demigod or hero.) The series begins with The Lightning Thief, which was reviewed by our blogger Lauri, … Continue reading

The Danger of Selective Reading

Recently it occurred to me that there are distinct similarities between crossword puzzles and reading the bible. Let me explain. Often in a crossword, the clue doesn’t seem to make sense. You can’t think of the word you need to fill in the squares. Then you work on a couple of the clues going the other way. That fills in some of the letters and suddenly, you have enough clues to figure out the missing word. It’s like a light making everything clear. It’s like that when we’re reading the bible. We need to look at what is going on … Continue reading

What to Do When Another Parent Behaves Badly

We’ve all been there. The time when you are confronted with misbehavior from your child and have yelled or said something that you regret later. In the middle of the grocery store, I once told my eldest son that if he didn’t stop riding the grocery cart at full speed then I was going to sell him to the gypsies. But what do you do if you spot a situation between another parent and child that escalates into an area that may be abusive or even just uncomfortable? Celebrity Liv Tyler was recently in the news for telling a mother … Continue reading

Suicide: Why Do the Neighbors Talk but do Nothing?

This weekend I happened across a woman who needs help. She had a For Sale sign out front of her block of units and I stopped to ask her which one was for sale. She told me but it became obvious that she was distracted, depressed and anxious. So I stayed and talked about her garden a little, as she had been working in it when I approached her. As we talked I could tell she was not well emotionally and finally she made a comment that she had lost her daughter. The tears welled up but she didn’t want … Continue reading
