What’s Old is New Again

There’s nothing quite like parents and children bonding over a bunch of tiny, shirtless blue creatures that fear the fangs of a mangy feline. Just when you thought you and your son would never share another thing in common–BAM!–the Smurfs are suddenly cool again, and all is right with the world. The Smurfs hit the pop culture scene in 1981, and more than 250 episodes later they grew into animated icons. This year Macy’s named the blue elf-like creatures as the store’s “Holiday Ambassadors” and a full-length Smurf movie will be released in 2011. All the hype surrounding Smurfette, Papa … Continue reading

Enjoying Christmas

Christmas Eve has been and gone. How did we spend it? In the morning we played tennis but petered out as the day became too hot and other things needed doing. Grabbed the last minute Christmas card out of the mail box and hung it on the card tree before lunch. Mick’s tomatoes, cucumbers and beans he grows have been staples of our diet recently and the passionfruit vines are raining passionfruit. Mick went and picked those that had fallen off the vine. Ten minutes later I went and picked up another eight. No doubt the southerly breeze that blew … Continue reading

The Christmas Get Together with Family

As Beth pointed out Christmas gatherings with family can be stressful especially given many of the complicated family situations these days. As Mick said today when we were talking about family Christmases and the way some people go overboard, it’s time for us to take a step back and reevaluate what Christmas is all about. Like Beth, I see lots of people who are stressed and wishing Christmas was over. I had someone say it to me yesterday. Well, I’m one of those people who love Christmas. I love buying gifts for loved ones but then we have never gone … Continue reading

How to Make a Card Tree

Well the nativity scene is up right in a prominent place in the hall near the front door where anyone who comes can see it. The parcel man was the first visitor to see it. Then the lights went on the front window. The blue lights look like a crown around the bell and the star and the gold lights are arranged in a pattern around the bottom. It looks very pretty. The wreath is on the front door and baskets of pine cones and tinsel are scattered around several rooms. All we need now is the Christmas tree which … Continue reading

What is Christmas?

For many people Christmas is all about spending time with family. For others it is about presents and shopping and the hype that goes along with Santa and presents. For those estranged from family or with no loved one nearby Christmas is the loneliest time. It is no surprise that the suicide rate goes up at Christmas. Christmas is the time when we celebrate the fact of God’s love sending His Own Son into the world as a human baby. As Michael Card puts it ‘Christmas is the celebration of the keeping of a promise… the promise that he would … Continue reading

Christmas Lights?

Last week at church the minister talked of why Christmas and Christmas lights always go together. I’d heard other reasons as to how they were connected but they often seemed rather tenuous. But I liked the way he linked them. It made the most sense to me. Right from the beginning Christmas has always been linked with light. He used as his reference the prophecy of Isaiah 60:1-3 and the light coming into the darkness. John 1:1-5 and John 1:9-18 also pick up on this theme, identifying Jesus as the fulfillment of that Isaiah prophecy and the light come into … Continue reading

A Christmas Movie To Share with Your Loved One

‘Every Christmas should contain at least one soppy Christmas movie,’ my husband said as we perused the shelves of the video shop. We opted for ‘The Christmas Cottage.’ The alternative title is ‘Home for Christmas.’ When you’re not feeling well as Mick hasn’t been, the last thing you need is something heavy. Sometimes a piece of light entertainment is exactly what’s called for. Mick isn’t a fan of stories based on true life events but for some reason the blurb about this one appealed to both of us. It is about the artist Thomas Kincade The only actors we knew … Continue reading

Thanksgiving Love Stories: Home for the Holidays

Last year at this time Wayne and I were in Denver to celebrate Thanksgiving with our family. I remember being so excited about getting to spend a whole week with Wayne. Thanksgiving, Then and Now It was a big deal because we’d spent months apart enduring a commuter marriage. But then Wayne decided not to stay with the job in Jacksonville and to get his old job back here in Nashville. I was over the moon! (Mostly because I was tired of trying to keep the house show-ready and over only seeing him on weekends.) Last year, Thanksgiving week marked … Continue reading

Christmas Movies for Couples

As promised in my previous article, Christmas Eve Traditions for Couples, here are some Christmas movies that you might enjoy. Heather shared her favorites in Holiday Date Night – Celebrate with Christmas Movies. Do You Like Chevy Chase? ““National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation” isn’t exactly a romantic holiday movie, although there are some sweet parts. If you like crazy slapstick adventure combined with some tender moments, you may enjoy this movie. Chevy Chase is married to Beverly D’Angelo and the two are very cute together, even as all their plans for a perfect Christmas turn to chaos. Is this a Couple’s … Continue reading
