As most of you well know from the media attention that marriage has been given the past few weeks, much debate has arisen about legal gay marriages. California has now joined Massachusetts in allowing legal gay marriage. Canada, our neighboring country, also recognizes the union between two mates of the same sex. Gay Marriage Legal Again in California

In what some will see as victory and others defeat, the California Supreme Court made history today when it overturned a voter-approved ban on gay marriage. What Does It All Mean? First and foremost, there are a lot of gay couples rejoicing right about now. This was an enormous decision which ultimately resulted in triumph for the gay rights movement. Yesterday the Oregon state senate approved the domestic partnerships bill that will allow Oregon to become the seventh state to grant same-sex couples full marriage-style benefits under state law. The governor vowed to sign the bill into a law shortly after the Senate passed it 21-9. In the News: Vetoed “Marriage” Bill in California Revisited

A bill was passed in 2005, which would legalize same sex marriage in California. Governor Schwarzenegger vetoed it, establishing that it is not the right of lawmakers or courts to decide what is best for the state, but that it is up to the people of California. A spokesperson for the governor has stated that he has not changed his mind on this matter, indicating that if the bill passes he will veto it again, but that won’t stop the bill from being considered by the Assembly Judiciary Committee. It’s not surprising, after the votes last week it was only a matter of time before the laws would be challenged in state courts. Advocates in California have asked the California Supreme Court to consider their legal challenge on the California Gay Marriage Ban. The briefs filed with the court argue that banning gay couples from marrying violates the California constitution and they are requesting the justices address this immediately. Court Rules Same-Sex Spouse Can be Covered by Health Insurance

A woman filed a lawsuit after her employer refused to allow her to cover her same-sex spouse on her health insurance policy. Her employer was the United States Government. A court ruled that she should be allowed to cover her same-sex spouse on her employer sponsored health insurance. Massachusetts, Connecticut, Iowa, Vermont, New Hampshire, New York, and the District of Columbia are states that issue marriage licenses to same-sex couples. In case you didn’t know, teen Disney megastar Miley Cyrus turned 18 on November 23, but 2010 has not been the greatest of years for her. Oh monetarily, Miley is rolling in the dough. Forbes listed her as #13 on their yearly Celebrity 100 and she made about 80 bazillion dollars this past year. Okay, that was an exaggeration, but this kid is everywhere – trust me, she is loaded. Chaz Bono Applies for Name/Gender Change

Chaz Bono, the child of ‘70s greats Sonny and Cher, has filed to legally his gender to male and his name to Chaz Bono according to TMZ. For those that haven’t been following this story, Chaz was born Chastity Bono in 1969. The only child of Sonny and Cher, Chastity grew up in the spotlight, often appearing on her parent’s television show. When Chastity turned 18, she came out to both her parents as a lesbian.
