There is No Insurance Against “Bad Mothering”

Two adult children in Illinois are suing their mother for being a “bad mother”. This case does not involve instances of abuse or neglect. Sadly, since one cannot purchase malpractice insurance in the case they are sued by their children, this mom is going to be paying her court fees out of pocket. No one ever said that parenting would be easy. People make mistakes from time to time, and this includes parents. It is normal for a mother to have a moment or two when she wonders if she is a good mother or not. The answer to that … Continue reading

Learning from the Mistakes of Others

We all make mistakes. Some of us make a lot more than others. But this is okay, because we learn from them … or at least, we try to learn from them, right? I know I tend to run into the same brick wall a few times before I really “get it,” but then I shake it off, make a mental note, and try to do better next time. That’s what life is about—having experiences, becoming stronger because of them, and moving on. But we don’t really need to make every mistake in the book in order to learn, do … Continue reading

October 2010 General Conference-What Have You Done With My Name?

I often don’t think about what will happen when I’m gone. I don’t think about the “legacy” I might be leaving. But, every once in a while, it flutters through my mind, and I think, “What will people say about me when I’m gone?” or “Did I do enough in this life to make an impact on someone, somewhere?” I look at those of my relatives that have already passed on, and I only have good thoughts. I do not think of the mistakes they made, or my bad experiences I may have had with them, but I think of … Continue reading

Gossip and Loyalty in Marriage

Two things recently started me thinking about gossip and loyalty in marriage. One was in the book ‘Take Joy’ by Jane Yolen where she talked of certain ’emotional core truths.’ She went on to mention some core truths about herself. One of these was ‘being loyal’ to those she loved. The other sign recently that tickled my fancy was this. ‘I never repeat gossip, so listen carefully the first time.’ But what has gossip got to do with marriage? Sadly, I thought it related closely to not being loyal to our spouse. Listening to guys talk at times, I hear … Continue reading

The Eight Biggest Laundry Mistakes

You have to approach laundry as a diligent task. Otherwise you may wind up with clothes that need to be rewashed, or worse, replaced. Bad laundry habits can also lead to your clothing wearing out sooner than it should. At one time or another I’ve made all of the following laundry mistakes. And hey, sometimes when I am in a rush to get “Mount Washmore” done, I still do make these mistakes, as you will see. But I wanted to share them with you in the hopes that you can avoid these mistakes whenever possible. Yesterday morning, my eldest was … Continue reading

The Marriage Blog Week in Review – November 4 –10

It’s been a busy and exciting week here in the Marriage blog. There was a national election on Tuesday that saw 7 states accept constitutional amendments to ban gay marriage, while one state – Arizona said no to that ban. If you don’t read my fitness blog, you may not have known that I also quit smoking this week and today marks Day 4 heading into Day 5 and I’ll be writing about how great my spouse has been in supporting this effort next week. In the meanwhile, if you missed any of our key stories this week, here is … Continue reading

10 Mistakes That Make a Bad Marriage

It’s hard to put a finger down on what makes a marriage go bad. It can be bad attitudes, it can be accenting the negative, and it can even be an inability to forgive. But more often than not, it’s an inability to find anything positive in your relationship that demonstrates how damaged a marriage has become. Before that time, however there are attitudes and behavior that we can bring into our marriages and if we don’t correct them we may be limiting our chances on finding that happily ever after. Here are 10 of the most common bad attitudes … Continue reading

How Brain Injuries Can Affect Your Money

I was in a car accident back in March and sustained a concussion in the left quadrant of my brain. That’s right … the left side. The side that controls logic, reasoning, ability to do math, and consequently, how you handle money. I’ve always been the bill-payer in our family. I have a handy-dandy chart, I know when everything is due, and on payday, I sit down and pay all the bills. This has been my routine since I got married. Come rain, come shine … the bills are paid on payday. And yet, for some reason, two months ago … Continue reading

The Reasons for Scrapbooking From a Real Life Scrapbooker

In the many years that I have been scrapbooking, I have been asked more than once, my reasons for scrapbooking. While my main reasons haven’t ever changed, my goals and layouts and what they reflect have changed. Most people scrapbook to preserve their memories. Some people scrapbook because it is a creative outlet that allows them to be artistic and utilize photographs in the process. While both of these hold true for me, there is a deeper meaning for me, and I hope that my real life scrapbooking will make you reconsider your own layouts and moments that you choose … Continue reading
