Parenting in a Social Media World

Parenting in today’s world has completely changed due to social media.  It has presented new challenges, twists and turns that parents of yesteryear couldn’t have even imagined. Think about the difficulties of getting a teen to communicate, to share what is going on in their life.  It can be like trying to pull teeth.  But spend some time on their Facebook page and you can learn all sorts of things. That can be good in many ways.  You might learn about some struggles your teen is having.  But it can also be bad in that you discover some things maybe … Continue reading

Mother’s Blog About Mentally Ill Son Goes Viral

A mother has written a blog that has been passed around the internet via Facebook and in links in several other blogs and news articles. In it, she discusses her fear that her son will someday do something similar to what Adam Lanza did in Connecticut. It is an eye-opening piece of writing. Yesterday, I wrote a blog that clarified that not all people who have Asperger’s Syndrome are violent. Some can, and do, express loud, verbal, outbursts or may push someone away from them. Typically, the violence that people with Asperger’s Syndrome express is not premeditated or planned out. … Continue reading

Legacy.com Offers Online Memorials For Your Loved Ones

Memorials take many forms. There is a growing trend to create online memorials for family members who have passed away. I was reminded of this when I received a somewhat confusing email a few moments ago. Today, many of us live our lives online. We write blogs and journals, create audio content, and post photographs of subjects that are important to us. We share these little pieces of ourselves through social media websites such as Facebook, Twitter, or Google +. This content will remain online after we have passed on, (unless someone actively removes it). Traditionally, genealogists would attempt to … Continue reading

For the Love of All Things Not Math

My daughter is officially done with second grade. School is out for the summer and I couldn’t be happier. It was a rough year, but my daughter survived and even managed to score a perfect 4.0 on her report card. Straight “A”s, including in her least favorite subject-—math. When I congratulated her on the impressive accomplishment, my daughter noted that she was surprised that she had received an “A” in mathematics. “I hate math, Mommy!” she exclaimed. Translation: Math doesn’t come as easy to her as reading, spelling or Social Studies. It actually requires working a little harder to master … Continue reading

Body Image and Social Media

There is a disturbing trend lately in social media, or should I say there is a new disturbing trend, there are already a lot of disturbing things out there. It seems that young girls are making videos of themselves and asking the world if they are pretty or not. As one girl said, she got several sweet comments but then the nasty ones started. At a time when all young girls are struggling with body and self image this is one of the worst things I can imagine. I certainly don’t want my daughters image of herself shaped by random … Continue reading

My Love-Hate Relationship with Facebook

Facebook has become a love-hate relationship for me. I love the fact that I am able to keep in touch with family members more closely. I love being able to connect with other writers. I love finding old friends. I love how my church has its own Facebook community. While all of these are things I love, there are also things I hate. Like the sometimes dumb stuff my children post. Especially when they are friends with church leaders or family members, leaving wide open the door of possible judgment being passed. I hate the way someone can think they … Continue reading

Insta-Love

I heart the Instagram iPhone app. Some of my friends have ditched their traditional digital cameras, and now exclusively use their phones to snap photos of their kids and any other frame worthy subject. I still shoot with my camera, though not nearly as often. For those of you who have not been sucked into the world of Instagram, the free iPhone app is basically a social network for photos. Once you take your pictures you can edit, apply eye-popping special effects and filters, and then share them with your peeps via Twitter, Facebook, Flickr, Tumblr, and a several other … Continue reading

Time to Oursource Social Media?

Like it or not social media is here to stay. Most companies have a Facebook page and most Tweet daily. It is a personal way to connect with customers. Customers have multiple ways to be involved with company promotions, suggestions and complaints. Companies have a way of putting their brand in front of their customers on a daily basis. We all love social media for the convenience, opportunity, and the interaction with friends, clients and family. It can be the fastest way to spread word of mouth advertising. Yet, the only way to be successful in the area of social … Continue reading

Can You (and Should You) Talk About Serious Social Issues With Your Child?

Yes. In a word, yes. You should talk about serious social issues with your child. My daughter was sick this week and we were watching The Sound of Music. Until a few months ago, I had never watched this movie. I’d played its music ad infinitum in band classes from grade 6 on, but I’d avoided watching it. However, my daughter loves musicals, so The Sound of Music it has been, over and over for the past few months. The Sound of Music is a relatively light movie until just over halfway through. It involves a lot of singing and … Continue reading
