The Cruise, My Marriage, and a Taste of the Amazing Race

One of the unexpected things Wayne and I got to do on our Alaskan cruise was play a game that gave us a taste of how we’d do on the Amazing Race. We fared about as I expected, but we also did a little bit better than I expected. Boat Activities Our first full day on the ship was a day at sea. (For those of you who haven’t taken a cruise before, that means it’s just you and the boat out on the open water. You don’t stop at any ports.) The first cruise we took (a short one … Continue reading

More about Covenant Marriages

In one of my last articles I began discussing the three types of marriages that were describing in some of my recent reading. The first type that I talked about was the marriage of convenience where the partners seemed to share nothing, have little bonding, and have separate lives. The second marriage type was a marriage of codependency in which the partners share everything and have no life outside of the marriage. In this marriage one partner is often seen submissive to the other. The final type of marriage that will be discussed in this article is the covenant marriage. … Continue reading

More Marriage Types

In a recent book that I was reading the author described marriage as existing in three styles or types. In her opinion marriage could take on only three different forms. Those were convenience, codependency, and covenant. The first, a convenience marriage, is a marriage that is built around money and sex. The two partners do not share an emotional bind. They are in the marriage for superficial reasons. In most cases the couple is unhappy but stays in the marriage for the security or due to the fear of change. The two may be very social and have a high … Continue reading

Marriage Types: Young

Like people, relationships and marriages are different. They vary in many aspects and areas. Some couples are more committed with covenant marriages while others are more open with polygamous marriages. Other people are in their second marriage. While some people marry later in life, some marry very early in life. I know some couples who married before they even graduated from high school. Like those couples who marry late in life, there are several reasons why a couple may choose to marry early or young. Some couples marry young due to the fact that they are expecting a baby. The … Continue reading

Marriage Types: Later Life

So far we have discussed covenant marriages, second marriages, and polygamous marriages. It is amazing how many different types of relationship bonds couples can have. Even traditional marriages can come in various forms. Couples marry at all different stages in their lives and for all different reasons. Some couples marry later in their lives. There are several different reasons why a person may put marriage on hold during what most consider to be the common marrying years. Some couples do not marry until they are in their late 30s or 40s. Some people wish to get married before this age … Continue reading

Marriage Types: Polygamous

My last couple of articles have focused on various marriage types. The first discussed couples who chose to make an even stronger bond by committing through a covenant marriage. The second article took a peek into couples who were previously married and were taking part in their second marriage. Some couples decide to take marriage to a completely new level and by pass most traditional terms and thoughts of a “normal” marriage. These couples choose to marry but not make a physical commitment to one another. In a polygamous marriage, couples are open to dating and physical relations with other … Continue reading

Marriage Types: Second

In my last article I discussed how some people have different ideas about marriage than the traditional and “average” marriage that we all think of couples entering. Like people, relationships are different. What works for one couple may not work for another. My first type of marriage was covenant. Covenant marriages are characterized as sharing a deeper bond and stricter divorce rule than other marriages. In this article I will take a look into couples that are entering their second marriage. Second marriages are different from first marriages in several ways. Second marriages can be either a second time around … Continue reading

Is Divorce an Option in Your Marriage?

Divorce was once a very quiet and embarrassing process. Now divorce is thought of to be a fairly common practice. While Heather addressed the drop in divorce percentage over the past couple of years, some do not give more than a second thought to obtaining a divorce. Some people go into marriage feeling that if it does not work they have a way out trough a divorce. Divorce is too common and easy for many couples. When most couples unite in marriage, they never consider the thought of getting a divorce. So what happens a few years (or months) later … Continue reading

Should you Keep your Money Separate or Together in a Marriage?

A discussion regarding marriage and money really has two parts. The first is the financial considerations and the second is the emotional. Money unfortunately plays a large part in most couple’s struggles. In this day and age, many women now work or have money from an outside source. Whether they came to the marriage with large assets, their own business, or other types of money situations, the relationship between couples and money has dramatically changed from 30 years ago. With these shifts in women’s independence and a family’s reliance on two incomes, there comes a new dynamic of whose money … Continue reading
