Get Your Soil Ready for Summer!

It’s been a wild spring here, with hail and pouring rain and temperatures that are near freezing. However, the garden is calling and so is the soil. Soil is the foundation of the health of your garden. In your vegetable garden, you likely have a whole lot of soil at the moment. If you live somewhere that is a little warmer, you may also have perennials or annual food crops growing. If you live somewhere quite cold, your garden might be just stretching its tendrils and waking up. In the winter, adding a cover crop like those fava beans or … Continue reading

More about Idling in Your Car

Yesterday, I blogged about why you shouldn’t sit idle with your engine running for more than 30 seconds. Now I know this is a hard concept for many to grasp – I even have a bit of trouble with it. But the benefits are tremendous. Here are a few myths and facts that might make you decide to turn your key, and be idle-free. Myth: You need to warm up your engine before driving. Experts say that yes, the car needs to be warmed up, but idling is not the way to do it. To warm up the car, let … Continue reading

Make a Move toward Low Maintenance

Previously I discussed the difference between being a high maintenance and a low maintenance person. Good and bad people alike can be both high maintenance and low maintenance. Being one or the other does not necessarily mean that you are unloving or unworthy. Yet it can determine what kind of mate you make and how successful your relationships are. As a general rule, relationships often work best if you lean more toward the low maintenance side of life. Life can at times be very difficult. Ideally, our romantic relationship should be the one thing that makes us a little happier … Continue reading

Are You a High Maintenance Mate?

Have you ever heard or used the term high maintenance to describe a person? I have actually heard it used to describe both children and adults. High maintenance people are people who are thought to be very demanding. The demands may be emotional, physical, or both. Some children are high maintenance in that they require a lot of attention from their parents. With adults, it is usually said that some women are high maintenance in that they demand a lot of goods from their mate. These women often place pressure on their mate to take them places and buy them … Continue reading

Material Effects on a Marriage

We live in a very material world. Like Barbie, there are many material girls out there. We usually give these ladies the label of being “high maintenance”. By using that term, we typically are referring to a woman who needs the best of everything. She expects to be pampered and have someone at her beck and call at all times. While not all wives fit this description, in many cases, material items do have a great effect on the happiness of a marriage. I think that we would all like to say that as long as we have each other … Continue reading

Your Cranky Baby Might Be Einstein

Okay not quite, but if you have a child that is cranky, with a little extra TLC he may just be at the top of his class when he gets to the 1st grade. I find this study interesting on several levels because I have had one of those cranky babies. But I’ll get to that in a minute. The study will be published tomorrow in the Journal of Child Development. Basically, they took approximately 1,300 families and followed the infants from 6 months of age through 1st grade. The hypothesis was that babies who were easy going would do … Continue reading

Prepare your Yard for Autumn and beyond

As summer fades away, there are several things you can do to prepare your yard and garden for autumn and beyond. Begin with mowing, edging, and getting rid of weeds. Even weeds that are dying from the August heat can make your yard look uncared for and unattractive. They don’t always wither completely away, so it’s best to pull them or break out the weed eater. If your garden is no longer producing, but is looking a bit overgrown, you may want to go over it with the mower or weed whacker too. Then, gather all your clippings and spread … Continue reading

What do You Think About a Franchise?

I have never seriously considered owning and operating a franchise business, but I’ve done a little investigating. I also know a couple people who have gone this way to small business ownership and are incredibly happy and successful with it. Increasingly, there are small franchise opportunities available that are geared toward the home-based business (although most are still larger operations) and I’m wondering if this will become the wave of the future for home-based businesses? I periodically get e-mail notices about new franchise opportunities. Some, like housekeeping, web design and landscape maintenance are ones that could be incorporated into the … Continue reading

Your Checklist for Renting a Place

In the next couple of years you want to buy a property, but what do you do until then? Not everyone is at the point where they can afford to put a large sum down for a house. Even with no money down options, you may have to compromise by coping with a high interest rate or other catches. Until you are ready to weigh all the options for making a real estate investment, find a place that is nice to rent and your buying moment will come. 1. Ask yourself what you want. This seems simple enough, but it … Continue reading

The Lure of Used Cameras

My dream camera costs $3,000. I don’t have $3,000. Perhaps that’s why I don’t own my dream camera. Santa still hasn’t delivered my Dyson, so I’m thinking he probably isn’t going to be filling my stocking with a Nikon D800 any time soon. As much as reality bites, I know I am not alone. While there are dozens of high-quality, luxury DSLR cameras on the market, most people don’t have the funds to purchase them new. For shutterbugs looking to get their hands on cutting-edge picture-taking tools without breaking the bank, there is the used camera option. High-tech cameras can … Continue reading
